Right?? Wrong?? Hummm..
If I look at CC2, Roberto Giobbi teaches the elmsley count exactly the way you performed it on your video... And let me just repeat what I said in my previous post, I think ou did a very good job! So in that sense, you did it right. I simply believe that it looks more natural when displaying the cards that they move from right hand to left hand...(after all, that is the purpose of a count, to display the cards you are using, even if this is sometimes done in a subtle maner...). I am sure other experts will have other opinions, so instead of saying right or wrong, I will simply say that you should start by getting the basics perfectly, and then see what subtleties you feel like using. Have a nice day! Louis Jutras |

Thank you for the explanation Louis. I haven't gotten to volume two of CC yet, I'm still on CC1. I'll be sure to check it out once I get there. I got started with all this trying to learn the tricks I wanted, and working on the sleights required. But now I'm more focused on learning the basics, so I'm diving into CC. I'm thinking of getting RRTCM is that as good or better than CC?

I started out in RRTCM many years ago ('70s) and I bought the entire C.C. series over 3 years ago. I personally prefer C.C. over RRTCM because it has more up-to-date & comprehensive information than RRTCM. RRTCM was published in 1948 and C.C. 50+ years later. You already have started in C.C., I would stick with it and later if you feel the need you can check out RRTCM. BTW, when you perform the E.C. the cards are in position at the end of that count to do the J.C. and so on. The E.C. will displace the card (joker) from the third position to the fourth position and then the J.C. will displace it back to the third position. Both will keep the card hidden & it is a great exercise to practice both count/displays.

EC-JC-EC-JC . . . . I would like to second KRaZy4KaRdZ, that was also the way I practiced EC/JC.
As for the handlings, there are several ways to hold the cards during the count - just use the search engine and you will be amazed . . . holding the card with you fingertips, holding then deeper in the hand and so on. I adopted a style where all the cards come from the the top of the pack, held by an almost motionless left hand. The right hand is pulling the cards from the pack. Andy

Thanks for all the great feedback! A lot of stuff to dive into here! I guess I'll stick to CC for now. Again thank you for your time!

Hi Doc, your video looked good. If you, or anybody else would like to take a look at mine...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ7Q0ml8tA4 I'm sure it's really basic to most of you guys but everybody's got to start somewhere, right? I have an Elmsley Count effect but haven't recorded it yet. Maybe soon... Regards, Jason

Jason,
Your change looks nice, however you should show the primary card a bit more first, to get the full impact of the change. |

Cheers mate - I was at work with a machine running it the background but thanks for the tip... When it's live you simply ask, "So, what card do I have here?" Video stuff is a whole new adventure for me!

Thanks Doc, very kind. Sorry to hijack your thread!!! I didn't have the confidence to post my own.
I welcome constructive criticism, like Jedi's, but when it's just slating you or your performance then it kind of knocks you back, y'know? Doesn't seem that'll happen here though. I'll let you know if I upload my Elmsley Count...

Avoid such moves, and your count will be improved. Hideo Kato |

Thank you for your feedback. Are you refering to me squareing up the cards? Any tips on how I can do the "setup" a bit more smoothly?

Yes, squaring handling must be clearer.
1. Insert the face up Ace. 2. Square the cards and hold squared cards in right hand. (Square the cards in one action). 3. Do a magical movement if you like, or pose a little for the effect. 4. Do Elmsley Count. You should choreograph any movements to make magic more magical and more artistic. It seems that chorecographing is not for a beginner, but it is surely for a beginner. It is too late if you get bad habits. Hideo Kato |

Hi Doc, just wanted to say that I agree the JC described by Dave Van Vranken and skycrapper DOES feel unnatural but I'm sure that's down to hours of continuous EC's.
I've started alternating as suggested, fairly slowly, and when I don't fluff it the counts do flow pretty well. In my opinion you just need to practice (whichever method you prefer, but I'm getting used to Dave's JC...)

From FreefallFool-san's experience, we can see that it is difficult to change method from method-A to method-B after you got used to method-A.

You're not wrong, HK. I wasn't knocking your preferred method, I just think whichever feels more natural to you, the performer, will automatically be performed more naturally, and therefore be less detectable. Would you agree that it's just down to practice?

Sorry, I don't agree that it's just down to practice. There are good methods, bad methods. My point is it is important to select a good method to practice.
I won't say my method is the best method, but I meant it is one of very good methods. There are clear reasons why good methods are good and bad methods are bad. Hideo Kato P.S. Please call me Hideo or Kato-san, but not HK, I am not from Hong Kong. 63 years old man is not used be called in such a way. |

Please accept my apologies Kato-san, force of habit on my part. Would you say that, in your opinion, I should try to change to single, single+steal, double, single?
I've only just started with the JC so I SHOULD be able to switch. Thank you for your advice. Jason
