I wondered what opinions people have about derren brown and his book, is he a quack or a legitamate person, plus if anyone has a copy they would be willing to sale or trade something for it, I'd love to have a copy of it.

I'm not willing to give up my copy, but I'll tell you that I really enjoyed the book. Seeing as this is posted in the hypnosis thread, I assume that's the section of the book you're interested in.
The chapter on Hypnosis and Suggestibility is a nice primer for further study. He lays out the basics of the art and walks you through an elementary induction with some deepening techniques. He relates an amusing anecdote about his university days, and he covers a wide range of suggestibility topics. On a whole, though, the book was very good and an entertaining read. Your question about his credibility is covered in the beginnings of the book. Derren states (hopefully truthfully) that in his own performances there is some deception but that the information he delivers in the book is accurate and true |

I don't have this but I have PURE EFFECT and ABSOLUTE MAGIC... whats nice about him is he doesn't have any "in group" or otherwise bias towards NLP and hypnosis... but he merely takes that as a tool or one of the tools he uses in his repertoire.
I don't know but some of what he does in TV screams, stooge!!! But if someone's gonna go ****y just cause I have that notion, then Derren must really be good. |

Isn't this material also available in DVD format?
If so please compare which has more value and why. Also, kindly provide a link to purchase this work in both formats. In addition , I believe there is a "Trick of the Mind DVD 2". Is that ritght? Please comment on its contents. And, there is also "Inside your mind", by Derren brown. Please comment on this work as well. Many thanks. Jonathan

There is in Youtube. What a terrible way to watch movies, though free...
The production value and presentational skills are TOP NOTCH, imho, as for his ethics on how he deploys his methods I have no say cuz I don't know... But this I say for sure - I am more entertained by Derren Brown's material than watching that magician turned endurance artist who would rather stand 42 months in a glass box... so there. |

Derren Brown is extremly legitimate!!! He is really pushing the envelope performance. He's consistently working on new TV shows and has a very tight schedule performing stage shows in London.
What's interesting about Derren is he meshes principles in sleight of hand and Psychological/ NLP techniques. Openly saying to his spectators everything is based on such. There are a few video clips on the BBC website from his shows. Any book by him is a great investment. Always valuable, entertaining reads. |

I only can second that. Have a look into the mnemonic section of the book!

This book is more for a lay person, but I still found it interesting because it delves into how he thinks and his thoughts on religion... I found it a good read, his funny/quirky tone appeals to me.

Trick of the mind is a very good read in my opinion. It covers a diverse range of topics with just enough information to tantalise so that you want to find out more.
Derren is an excellent showman. I honestly don't believe he uses stooges or camera tricks. He may well use 'traditional' magic techniques in some cases to achieve effects which are then portrayed as otherwise, but to me this is part of his genius in style. Also at the start of the show he freely admits to doing this so he's at least being dishonest in an honest sort of way. |

You only have to see him on stage to know he doesn't use camera tricks, and he certainly doesn't use stooges, there are far too many volunteers to pay off.
As far as being legitimate, you'd have to ask his mother... It's really none of our business though. |

Tricks of the mind is a great read. Derren is one witty man. As for his legitimacy...I should think that he would've been exposed by now if he was using stooges.

I remember skimming through this in a local bookstore and thinking that it's seems of as though its written for the layman and consequently put it off for a long time. I then came across it again and just impulsively bought it. To my delight I thoroughly enjoyed it. With regards to magic, hypnosis and NLP, he writes about each using anecdotes, scholoarly references and a touch of personal philosophy (see also Absolute Magic).
He goes on to extend his line of thinking by touching on naturally-occuring illusions which then leads him into talking about psuedo-sciences, religion etc. It appears that Derren intends to enlighten his readers to the wonderful tricks that our minds naturally play on us (eg. probability, perceptual illusons). Having some knowledge on such things myself, I found this very interesting and written very accessibly - I even followed up some of referenced texts in the areas that really grabbed my attention. So overall I found it a refeshingly insighful and enjoybale read. Ross

The book is good, and is designed for the layman. It's a great way into the mind of Derren and the thoughts that have influenced his style. In my oppinion the best book that you can own by him is Absolute Magic though, I know silly prices are now being paid for Pure Effect and Absolute Magic, probably by those wanting to find the methods behind the tv shows, I think there going to be a little dissapointed, but the wealth of information in Absolute magic is incredible.
The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

The book has my vote. It serves as a knowledge base for the layman but also provides incredible insight into his approach to stage. I love his hypnosis section in which he does not necessarily agree with stage hypnosis shows, but mentions one or two nice routines.
Still one of the best
