At present my rope repertoire consists only of the basic professor's nightmare which I learned from a Penguin instant download.

The reactions I get from this effect are great so far, so I am really interested in adding a bit more rope magic to my close-up work.

I did buy the Fulves Self-Working Rope Tricks book a while back and haven't spent any time with it, so maybe I can find something to my liking in there, but was wondering if any of you rope pros could suggest anything I might want to try?

I am thinking I want to avoid the cut and restored effects for now, but rather stick with working scissors-free.

I know this question is a bit vague and lacking in specifics, but any suggestions as always will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the magic Café. Go to page 77 of the Fulves book and look at the Vishnu rope mystery it is a great routine to do to music.
You can not go wrong with fiber optics, and there is so much good stuff there that you don't have to use the fake cut.
The professors nightmare that you learned forn Penguin stinks, try to learn a more entertaining version.
The Daryl 3 DVD set of rope magic is full of great ideas, and they are up on ebay all the time.

Yes Richard Sanders does his version of PN as part of the fiber optics routine, and that Penguin PN routine is a poor excuse for a magic trick.

I started out thinking rope magic was ok and a good fill in and something for the kids.
But now I have a whole stock of tricks picked up from pretty much all the sources mentioned and I take a piece from here and there. And people love it. Use a small ring about 5inc diameter adds stuff to it good for audience members getting involved. I can understand the wait for cut re stored but again the audience can get involved and it just blow them away they saw you cut it and now its together what the ****. The other good thing is it packs very small plays big you can buy it any were.

I feel obligated to add the one trick that just knocks them dead, especially magicians, it is the Dennis Loomis knot routine plus. I can only describe it as a thing of beauty.

I highly recommend a product from El Duco's Magic called "Willi Wessel's Close-up Ring and Rope Routine." It comes with the props and an instructional DVD. It took me a few days to memorize all 7 moves, and then about a month to get all of the moves down pat, but it was definitely worth the practice. I get great reactions from this ring and rope routine. Once you are smooth with all the penetrations, you will even enjoy performing it for yourself in front of the mirror. Trust me.

I have Flip, Willi Wessel, Aldo Colombini, Karl Fulves, Stewart James, and Daryl. If you are going to do ring, and rope magic only buy one, because there are only so many things you can do with a ring and a rope, and all of these gentlemen do those things well.

Al is correct, but eventually you may want to check them all out and piece together your own routine.

The above routines are good, but you have a lot of magic already in Fulves.

If you will do stage/parlor, look at the Gysel Spirit Tie, p140 in Fulves.

With some good "bits of business" and routining, it is a professional routine.
You can do a search on MC for "Gysel", and you will get plenty of ideas for this routine.

If you want to do close up: learn how to tie a pop-off Knot, p47 in Fulves, It can be a great way to spice up the finish of a cut and restore routine.

You can also learn a variety of ring on rope routines in Fulves p122.

Watching the clip of Pat Page's Everlasting Rope gave me an idea for a funny bit. You put the scissors into your outer jacket pocket, the drop down out of view... you say, "OWWWWWWWWWW...." and lift your pants leg and the scissors are seen stuck into your foot!

The secret to doing the double snap knot is to practice with both hands at a time. Do not try to master it with the left hand, or it will take forever. I have not had a lot of success with this trick even though I'm a juggler, but that is what Dennis told me. Also I can't emphasize strongly enough to use a twisted rope for the best results. You can do it with any rope, but I do it over 90% of the time with Dennis's 1/2" drapery cord.

Way to go Al! Sometimes I get lucky and the knots are close to the bottom of the rope. Then I can snap other knots above those knots. I've ended up with three knots on each rope. However, I wouldn't try more than two in performance...too risky.

Flip says you should never do the snap knot in performance because it isn't 100% certain, but spectators sense the difficulty and if you miss and finally get it they always applaud.

After I snap a knot with the right hand I do it with the left. Then I tell them "I know what you're thinking...he can do it with both hands but can he do both hands at once!"

I tell them I'm not sure but I will try and when I do it they literally jump out of their seats and I'm left in applause position holding up the two ropes.
