After the emergence of Derren Brown in the UK there was a great deal of reference made to bandwagon jumpers exploiting the newfound interest in mentalism. I was wondering who they are. Have any succeeded ? Is it a fair phrase to use anyway ?

This is an interesting issue. Can I add another level of discussion before it really kicks off?
I have been using the concept of suggestion, manipulation, and human behaviour in my act for around eight years. When Derren came on the scene (and boy am I glad he did), one or two lesser experienced armchair mentalists have dubbed my style of act as 'amazing routines, but a copy of Derren's style'. I do not take this personally, or seriously, since my style is my own. But has anyone else experienced this? |

Write2david. Has happened to many people. Look at all the street magicians that after David Blaine hit the scene they instantly became "copy cats". They may have been doing the same effects for years before, but because David Blaine is famous and they arnt. That is the public thinks "copy cat".

Chichi - it's a disappointing phenomenon.

But may also increase demand for your act too.

It can do that.

And if it's a problem, you can always change your premise and style so that no one even thinks of derren or david (or any other performer) when you perform.

Bamba- very difficult to get away from a 'label' as people will always want one to describe you as and if not then they will compare you to something similar aka Derren or David, but I appreciate your point.

If you are unique enough and promote yourself properly, you become the "label." Tony |

Tony - Agree with you there but for the majority of us we will be 'labelled'.

Has anybody in the States who performs regularly gotten this problem?
Granted that there were a few years (when I was getting my MBA) where I pretty much stopped performing outside my own living room, I've never had my act compared with anybody else (within earshot at least, lol). I've had people ask me about other performers (a la Criss Angle, especially referring to when he pulling the lady in half) but because they think there is some sort of fraternity among performers. I mean, I must remind them on some level but they usually go pretty far to say that he doesn't do what I do. Fellow americans, what are your experiences?

Anything I perform I try to make unique to me...changing things[premise, dialogue etc.] to suit my character and personality.
Occasionally folk's will ask me:"what do you[I] think of that guy on TV?" I never give my opinion...rather I just ask them if they enjoyed watching them. Some respond positively, some negatively, some a little of both. The most I will ever respond is..That's interesting. If they enjoy what I do...that is all that is important to me. Rich |

I'm not sure there's a bandwagen to jump onto that folks haven't been jumping onto for decades.
Brown's personality, on the other hand, is one that average TV watchers gravitate towards instantly.........this more casual, less self-important brand of mentalisim might be something new, and if it inspired a more spectator-centric angle to mentalisim, I'm all for the clones. |

Really interesting thoughts here guys. I suspect I will always be labelled, since audiences in the uk associate any kind of mind play with Derren.
By the way, I must qualify my earlier post by saying that derrens popularity has undoubtedly increased interest in what I do. I don't fight the association - I embrace it, but also point out the differentiations. |

Write2David,
When people are comparing you to Derren, understand it is only because Derren still has a copy of MOAB. Best, Mick

Just wait and see the effect Derren's new TV series has when it starts in the States later this year!
When it hit the screens in the the UK I was asked to consult for it. After it had aired I was inundated with offers to help Derren wannabes achieve the same level of fame. I helped a couple on their way but I would rather see the whole area of mentalism taken in a different direction now. The last thing I want to see is 4400 Derren clones in the US. |

Now Derren has moved to the states who did Derren sell his MOAB to over here in the UK?
A quote: "I want it! No I want that one! Please! But..... oooooooowwwwwwww But next week is AGES away!" Two random 7 and 9 year old boys in the UK. "Yes dear but you need to learn how to budget money... that's why we give you pocket money" - Some random parent in the UK. 7 and 9 years olds start to cry........ But then forget all about it when their random older brothers destory them at FIFA 06 on the XBOX." - Good times. Happy days. "Derren Derren Derren! Me Me Me! Please Please Please!" - Audience members at Derrens stage shows." ??? |
