I got me book in the mail. =D
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, after reading all the great reviews here. I've also met up with Amad3us, who lives about an hour away from me and has the Tarbell collection. I had to wait all weekend when I KNEW the book was at the post office. I already did a really simple trick for my niece, who was in absolute awe. I dig it. ; ] Just thought I'd spread the news. <3

Fantastic! As the famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tse said, "a long journey begins with a single step", you have taken the first step, now enjoy your journey. Remember that if you have any problems you have a host of knowledgeable workers here at The Café that will help out.

Did you get it from Mark and Nani and get it autographed? They make a run through texas and give lectures once in a while, were through about a year ago. Mark has a website http://www.markwilsonmagic.com Great book to start with, gives you a pretty good overview of magic and teaches a lot of principles. Tarbells is full of stuff, lot more covered than in Mark's book, but some of it requires you to already have a bit of knowledge. It was originally a correspondence course that each successive chapter required knowledge of previous chapters, but still a classic of magic. I know there is an IBM ring in tyler may be other clubs closer to you too, check both the International Brotherhood of Magicians site and the Society of American Magician's site. The Dallas Magic Clubs has a lot of regular lecturers come through. You might want to check out their website to keep track of what is coming. In addition there is a group known as the Texas Association of Magicians. It has a great convention every year, this year it will be in Corpus Christi, generally held over labor day weekend. Lots of good lectures, good dealers rooms, good competition and good shows. A great place to learn and to meet magicians from around the state. The bug has bitten, now let it infect you big time.

Mark Wilson's CCIM isn't the finest work in magic. It is, however, the single best dollar value in magic. Putting it in the top ten finest works, to be sure. My suggestion is to start saving your milk money and buy the Tarbel Series. No need to rush this process. Buy them one at a time over a decade or two.

I'll join the brigade of well wishers. I would also like to say it was a pleasure to get together this weekend, and I hope we can do it again soon! Have fun with the book.

JackScratch makes an excellent point. Many newcomers are scared off of the Tarbell Course by the price of the set. They needn't be! Every volume is designed to provide a variety of lessons, making each book a comprehensive course. Volume 1 (which was about $30 US the last time I looked) provides plenty of magic, with cards, coins, balls, small objects, ropes, and much more, enough to keep anyone busy for a long time before they need to move on to the next volume.
Anyone who really learns the material in volume 1, will have a very solid foundation in a wide variety of magical interests, IMHO. I have always thought of the Mark Wison course as "Tarbell Light" (NOT intended as a slam against the Wilson course, which is still one of my favorite magic books!) I'm merely seconding Drew's suggestion of Tarbell 1 as a possible "next step" Again, best of luck in magic! Don

Michiel, just about all of the first 5-6 that are in the book.
I'm terrible with names, though, so I'd have to actually get the book to tell you what they are. Also, I kind of guessed Tarbell's books would be a bit more advanced than the one Mark Wilson... But that was kind of the idea. I was telling Dustin.. I'm a very slow, stubborn sort of learner - I go over the same chapter 2 or 3 times before moving on to the next one. I've been performing the tricks for my family so far (since I'm not terribly confident at the moment), and I have 5 nieces and nephews, so it's great practice! P.S. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to this. My computer had to get de-wormed... and in the process 1700 viruses were deleted. >.< Eeesh.

Sounds like you're really getting the most out of the book. I always recommend this to anyone before any other resource. Glad to hear it's serving you well, and best of luck!
