When I was 10 years old I saw a magician perform Stanley Jaks' effect Supersonic. The magician turned out to be a magic dealer and 20 years later I asked him about this effect and where I could find it. He said that he had one set left somewhere which I bought. The instructions revealed the name of the effect, but made no reference to Stanley Jaks.
Some years later through "Cards by Martin" I learned that the effect was invented by Jaks. Now for the last piece of information (I am now forty-five): Does anyone know why on earth this trick is called Supersonic? It would be nice to get the answer before I retire (or go to see my creator). |

The first time I came across the effect, it was refered to as "The Supersonic Card Prediction", so if I HAD to guess, I would guess that "Supersonic" was the cool "modern" adjective in Jaks's heyday (1940s-50s), in rather the same way that we slap "cyber" on things nowadays to make it sound cool, even if it doesn't apply.
But it's just a guess. R

Rory,
Your explanation sounds reasonable and is in agreement with my own hypothesis. After all, why should there be any logic or rationale behind the naming of magic tricks? Still, if any of you know more, please post a reply. |
