And that doesn't count anything else published in other languages before that! From that time until now, there has been a lot of magic published! It is rare for something to be truly new! Granted, it can happen. But it is rare. Thousands of magicians have stumbled upon something they thought was new, only to later realize it had already been published in something like The Phoenix, Pallbearers Review or Ibidem, and was probably already old by the time it was published! It can be humbling. I know. It's happened to me. When you think about it, there are only a finite amount of methods to accomplish a given effect. (See The Trick Brain for a list of every method for nearly every magic effect), so it makes sense that parallel development of effects will take place. But forget focusing on what is or is not "new" methods to effects. Audiences don't know the method. All that matters is entertaining them by showing them magic. If I can entertain them with something that was old even in Professor Hoffmann's time, but bore them with the latest "new and improved" hyped effect, I'll go for the old tried and trusted every time.

Thank you very much for the advice. I hope at least a few of my effects are completely original, and I hope most of them have new, innovative twists or new handlings. Then I will be happy and will sleep well tonight.
By the way, it will please some of you to know that the Cups And Balls video no longer exists. That was truly my most weak performance, not to mention old performance. Michael Ktas

Michael, just drop the whole excuse giving fiasco everytime someone gives you a negative comment. Oh, that and the whole "I ARE SEVEN YEARS HURRRR"-thing. It's starting to get into. Oh, and I will be waiting for your set of lecture notes to be reviewed. You want reviews, then you will get them. Send me any notes with your ORIGINAL IDEAS. I want to see how original is your definition of 'original' as well as your handling of things.
From what I see, things are not good. I hope what you have to offer may be better than I expected. Trust me, I don't have incredibly high standard but I would at least expect to be offered original ideas and not ripped off ideas from other people.

Hey Michael,
One quick question. In your profile, you say you are a "magician, high school student, lecturer". Are you talking about magic? Do you honestly do magic lectures? Just wondering. Cody |

Well I'd slow down a bit if I were you. I don't think you are near ready in terms of material or technical skill to lecture. I am not ready to lecture. In my opinion, to lecture, one should have experience, skill, good material, and be generally respected by magicians in terms of their ability. Do what you want to do, but again, when you are a lot better, you won't want people remembering you at the point you are at right now.

Michael, I hate to say it but you were given one chance at a fresh start, and you were doing well for a bit. Then you fell back into this whole "fiasco" that you created at the start. I'm begging you to give this whole starting over thing one more shot. And I'm asking the Café to give you another chance. You've dug a deep hole here.
Stop trying to act like an experienced professional, let alone an adult. Know that you are very young and by trying to overprove yourself you have seriously damaged your reputation in the magic community, most of which is on the Café. Please act your age, and continue to be as passionate and ambitious as you are, but just be realistic about it. You're giving lectures to a club of professional magicians? Really? Okay, enough said by me. I'm going to do my best to resist posting in all these threads about Michael that have started. Best of luck to you Michael. Brian |

Brian,
I will start again. I knoe I am young, but I do generally hang out with adults rather than people my own age. What have I said that has brought all of this back into play? Please let me know, and I will fix my ways. And, please continue posting. Your advice is valued! I have tried very hard to not act as though I am experienced, and although I am in some ways, I am nowhere near as experienced as the fine gentlemen here at the Café or anywhere else, such as the magic clubs I attend. Yes, I have tried to start lecturing. I am VERY passionate about this craft, as many can tell, but I still have a lot to learn and a lot to think about. I once again apologize, and you can be sure this will be the last time. Michael Kras

Just let things go when you read something that others have posted about you. You keep saying that you had 7 years of experience but you're not a single bit professional at all! I don't mean as in working as magician but in terms of etiquette! I PM'ed you about this before that I may not have that many years of experience(3 for me) and you in turn replied and told me that "Maybe you learn at a much faster pace". The truth is: You are a slow learner. That is the cold hard truth. You may have the most amazing sleights and so great and wonderful but in the end, if you don't learn these life lessons, you're going to have the odds stacked against you for the rest of your life. Even here on the Café. Congratulations for tarnishing your own reputation. You have been given many chances.

I've been where you are now Michael, and very similar advice was given to me back then, luckily I listened and stopped acting like a pro when I was really just a magic student, regardless of how many years experience you have;'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'. In other words your ability can be judged from watching videos, it's not a time sensitive thing. Magical ability comes from practice, rehearsal, performing and learning at a pace that suits you. Without those you could be in magic for 40 years and still have very little ability. One thing I found myself doing back in the day (and I'll hold up my hands for doing this) was coming up with an idea, typing it up and publishing it. Sounds pretty normal doesn't it? but in reality I'd perfomed this effect around five times. Don't write up something you havent performed the hell out of, I know it's quicker and easier and you might not think your readers will notice, but they WILL. As soon as they start finding the flaws, the creases that were never ironed out. Take advice from someone who's been burnt once already.
Slow down, study well, and have fun I wish you all the luck and good fortune in the world brother. Thomas McCarron |

Do people pay to see your lecture? Are you freaking joking kid?
I saw your "promo video" on youtube. Do you use that to get gigs? I am sorry kid. But you have a lot of research and growing up to do before you can put out notes, manuscripts, or lectures. |
