Big Jeff,
Gaffs are great indeed. Pure sleight is just as great. If we combine both then we can create miracles to entertain. I say this first because some purist would shrug off the use of gaffs. I would say an expanded shell and a copper/silver coin. Good luck and have fun! Rannie Raymundo aka The Boss aka THe Manila Enforcer

Seems a bit like asking which instruments every musician should have. But, putting the horse before the cart, so to speak, every magician should determine the effects he wants to create, then acquire the tools which would be most advantageous towards creating those effects. Well, unless you look at gimmick coins as toys instead of tools, in which case you should get the most expensive ones, anything by the most popular makers, and the ones with the most pieces and parts, of course!

I don't do much coin magic, but for me, an expanded shell half, hopping halves and a scotch and soda are pretty much invaluable.

I would say start with just regular coins. Get good with those and then add a little something extra to help make it that much more magical. That way you do not become reliant on a crutch from the begining. Just an idea.

I think these are the very most valuable gaffs... listed in the order of importance to me.
1. Shell 2. copper/silver 3. Flipper 4. scotch & Soda 5. copper/silver/brass 6. hook If you conisder a jumbo coin a gaff, then add it to the top of my list. I also have a large collection of foreign coins. Everyone's going to have different priorities, as mentioned, it depends on the individual.

I always carry my Triple Threat and Hopping Half. Those contain some of the gaffs mentioned above.

The Peregrinating Halves, for example uses a gimmick but requires a good deal of sleight of hand. If the practitioner's sleight of hand is lacking, the trick falls apart. I love routines where a gimmick and sleight of hand are married together... I'm much less interested in routines that rely entirely on a gimmick w/o sleight of hand. |

When I started out in coin magic 30 years ago, I used to be a purisrt... sleight of hand only. Eventually my philosophy changed. I adapted the C/S coin as my favorite gaff. After all, you could ring it in and out of play at will, it looks and sounds real, it can't break and it's not expensive. Yet miracles can be created with such a simple gaff!
I met Dean Dill at a convention 12 years ago and he perforemed NO EXTRAS with 4 Malaysian Ringets I happened to have on me that day. He hooked me in with a non sleight effect only to teach me the power of the S***l. I have been converted from a sleight of hand pruist to someone who knows how to replace the band on a flipper.

A shell
a copper silver, a goshman pinch, a rention vanish, and a good finger, and classic palm. I really don't like using just gaffs for an effect. It feels kind of empty to me unless it's a matrix with a shell. |
