In any field there are different schools of thought... many of which contradict each other, and the validity of each can only be gauged by comparing it against the rigidity of experimentation or by its specific research method as stated in the literature.
In learning theory we have Structuralism (Thorndike, etc), Behaviorism (obviously Watson, Skinner and Miller and Dollard), Cognitive (Gestalt, Piaget) and Neurophysiological.... In personality, we have Psychodynamics (Freud, Jung, Horney anything on the uncsoncious), Behaviorism again, and Human Potential (Goldstein, Maslow, Rogers)..... But in Hypnosis, are there different schools as well? And who are the forerunners or important names in those schools of thought? :) |

Elman, Erickson, Mesmer?? Maybe...
All theories (and generalizations for that matter) are lies... Ie none of them are Right or Wrong, True or False.... More to the point, are they USEFUL... but that is perahps an Ericksonian or maybe Bandler and Grinderian view.

You have 2 schools of thought on even the very EXISTANCE of hypnotic trance.
VERY DIFFERENT. One thinks it exists and one thinks it does not. Within the group of those who think it exists you have many camps as well. There are many schools of thought. The best one is to find what you believe and why you believe it. THROUGH ACTUAL RESEARCH methods, not here on the Café'. Just because I believe trance exists, does not make it so. I work on the stage, have for 20 years. Thousands of shows literally. Does that validate an opinion? Nope unfortunatly not. There are many schools of thought about it yes. Mine is tied directly to my bank account. I get paid very well, live in a tropical paradise when I work so yep I believe. I have no need to argue the point, or to convince others of this fact. My belief is enough. The "theoretical" aspects of it I leave to greater minds than mine.

I suppose its just a box of chocolates then where you can take your pick. How about incorporating ALL? There's a man named Ed Tolman who incorporates Behaviorism with Gestalt principles... yet he tends to lean more to the latter, nonetheless he has both in his theory of Sign-Significate Learning. Unless that analogy doesn't apply because the schools in Hypnosis can NOT be compared or merged.... |

They are diametrically opposed.
