Hi Guys,
I will be in Las Vegas next week, and I am wondering if anyone knows of some entertainment stuff that is not too expensive, keeping in mind I will have my seven year old daughter with me. Any suggestions for activities are welcome, I have never been there before, so help a guy out.

The afternoon shows, like Mac King, etc. When you get there look thru the entertainment magazines you will find in your hotel room.

Check out this site might give you some ideas. Plus there are free to watch circus acts at the Circus Circus, kids have to go to the second floor area to watch them. the pirate show at TI, the downtown overhead light show on Freemont St. there is a game area in the basement of excalibur, as well as the game area at circus circus, and a game area on the second floor of NYNY. The madi gra parade in the sky at rio (seen by kids from second floor balcony), take her to the top of the stratosphere, good way to kill an hour or so with the inside view observatory.

Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Patrick, I'll be there Wednesday the 11th to Saturday the 14th. Will you be there then? My wife is a bit skittish about meeting other magicians, but maybe we could meet for a lunch or dinner? We will be at circus circus. If you will be there those dates, we can trade phone numbers.

She is skittish? My wife hates me hanging out with magicians because she isn't part of the conversation but skittish implies she has some concerns or fear of magicians. Tell her we are nice.

Actually I think her fear and concern is that I will spend all my time in my hobby and not with her. I love magic anf hanging with magicians, but she is the one I married.

I'll be there from the 8th. to the 15th.
I understand the wife thing. Mine's skittish too. I don't want to interfere with your vacations, so let me know what you think. Darwin's magic club meets Wednesday nights starting around 10:00 p.m.

There's also the lions at the M.G.M-free. Don't forget Rick Thomas at the Orleans his illusion show is a good afternoon value too. I live in the Vegas area but can't think of anything else at the moment if I do I will post whatelse I come up with.

If he's still there in the afternoon don't miss Fat Elvis at the Barbary Coast. The show starts at 3 and 5 and it's free. It's one of the best kept secrets in LV.

Greetings Cliff, Santa, Patrick & RS1963;
If you are in the area behind Paris Casino, on Koval, between Harmon & Flamingo, is a great little casino called Ellis Island. In the restaurant they offer a $5 prime rib dinner w/ veg and potato, and a salad or soup. It is one of the best local secrets in Vegas. From the strip, walk down Flamingo between bally's and Barbary Coast to Koval (two blocks) turn right, and on the left you will see Ellis Island. The restaurant is in the back area of the casino. Just ask for the $5 prime rib special and you will not be disappointed. Also when standing in the front of Circus Circus, look across the strip at the Riviera, immediately to the left is a slot parlor on the corner and in the back is a stand up counter style diner where everything is $1 (Shrimp Cocktail, burgers, subs, beer, soda, pasta, a big menu. When we were just there they were getting ready to add additional items that would expand the menu and have a list for $1 and another list for $1.50 so check it out) Hop over to the Imperial Palace casino and at the front entrance to the left pick up passes for the antique car museum, it is free and one heck of a great collection of antique and collector cars. You can also take the bus out to Ethel M's chocolate factory tour and cactus gardens (both free admission). I also highly recommend talking a day trip to the Grand Canyon, it is something to see and there are all kinds of specials that run from $55 to $80 a person for the trip, meal, and admission into the G.C. national park. It is worth the price to leave the driving to somneone else and relax. We have a condo in Vegas that we get to from time to time and I am always amazed at all the things to see and do without spending a fortune. Also if you are there on the first friday of each month, there is a downtown revival program called first friday with live bands, various food vendors, shows, antique shops and such. A first friday pass gets you discounts at the bars, shops and shows but a lot of it is all free. Just check out: firstfriday-lasvegas.org for more details. We were just there last month and picked up some great paintings and artwork from upcomming artist for about a third of what we would have paid anywhere else. Also saw Jeff McBride drumming with a group on the street there. First Friday has to be one of the best kept secrets for the locals, check it out. Can't forget Cappriotti's sub shop, a huge Italian cold cut 20" for $6. Hope that some of this helps, enjoy Vegas, I know we do everytime we go. All the Best Marty |

Well, I am back from Las Vegas,
(Sorry it didn't work out for us Patrick, but we were so full of doing stuff) We bought a time share, and between that and my gray hair (see other post) I feel old. We saw two great magic shows while we were there and I can easily recommend either of them, One was Dirk Arthur (Tropicana) and the other was Nathan Burton (Aladin's). Both do farily standard illusions shows, but my personal judgement of that kind of show is one simple question... was I entertained. The fact is I know how those illusions are done, and so there is no puzzle or "wow" factor for me. Instead I have to either enjoy the presentation or not. Although Nathan is at a second rate theater in a lousy time slot, I felt his show was the better of the two. He did ask that everyone who enjoyed his show recommend it to two friends. I have now done this. BTW I did have a great time in Vegas, I even left a few dollars (and I do mean a few) heavier than I arrived. (I love blackjack) Maybe I can connect with some of you next time we go. Rock on!

Martini, thank you for the info.
The last time I was in Vegas was the week they opened Circus Circus. All I remember, other than getting yelled at for walking into a topless review (eight year olds not welcome I guess) was the million dollars on display in front of Binions. |

Greetings MagicSanta;
The Million Dollar display at Binions has been gone for some time, sad to say as it was very impressive for tourist photo ops. There is still a lot to see and do in Vegas without spending a lot. That is not to say that you cannot enjoy the nig surf and turf buffets, but they are going to cost more now than just a few months ago. Go to restaurant.com and join up, it is free. This site allows you to buy discount coupons for restaurants all over the U.S. and there are quite a few in Vegas. It will definately save you a lot of money in the more expensive places. If you are heading out in the future, just shoot me an e-mail and I'll let you know some of the best places to hit while you are out there. All the Best Marty |

Thank you Marty. I just told the wife we should take a drive to Vegas. It is exactly 400 miles from where I live and I'd sure like to see it.
