Hey guys...
I have been searching all over the Café for the ideal reel for me, and am kind of leaning towards The Magnetic Reel by Henry Evans as of now... Hopefully you guys can help me out with my choice... It seems as though every single person who is looking for a reel has their own needs for one, so I'll put my needs down... (and please don't tell me to go to a pull, because a pull can't do such things like silk thru mic. stand) ~I definitely want to be able to vanish silks, bills, and other light objects into my sleeve ~I want it to be a locking reel ~I need it to be silent (usable for both closeup and stage) ~I want to be able to use it for both pinning in my coat arm, AND as an 'in the hands' reel (i.e. Silk Thru Mic Stand, Self Un-Tying Silk Knot, etc.) I have heard good things about The Magnetic Reel by Henry Evans, and also good things about the PM Reel, Swedish Reel, and Python Pulls, but I've also heard some bad things about those, such as loudness, not locking (Python), and other stuff... Please give me your advice on this subject... Thanks! -Vinnie |

Not too many people have this (the Henry Evans Magnetic Reel) reel I guess... BUT, I have it, and I LOVE IT!!! It is designed for closeup work! It is dead silent and always reliable!
I have heard good things about the El Duco reel aswell, but is it silent, and can it also be attatched inside of the jacket for using like a sleeve reel? Also, is it locking? Thanks for your input. =] -Vinnie |

Dear Vinnie,
I had examined El Duco's reel in the FISM 2003 by the recommendation of a German dealer ( and a Café member ) Manipulix. It has a locking and non-locking models. It was silent and strong. One of ny students use it to pull a paºr of glasses at the table. That is the glasses vanish from the table at the moment it was put on the table. And as far as remember Makha Tendo sells a very economical but a non locking powerfull reel. I bought it to vanish small objects as I stroll at the tables. Since I did not use Evans' reel, my comparison my not be complete. I can only recommend what I know. Cheers...

I have the python pull medium strenght and I can say that it wont work for what you are needing it for. As you allready mentioned it doesn't lock at all. It is also very strong to be only medium strenght. It can easily pull jumbo coin into sleeve or be used in Tommy Wonders ring, watch and wallet gaff as I use it. It isn't really loud reel, but I havent used it much on close-up. Mainly in Close-up shows as opener or palour and stage settings.

I own a HE Magnetic reel and it is a wonder-worker. It's silent and very strong.

A good reel has to be:
1. Locking 2. Silent 3. Strong The HE Reels' locking is not the greatest. It is silent and quite strong but a good reel has to have a reliable locking mechanism. I haven't had the chance to examine the PM reel yet but heard it's one of the best out there.

Silvio, you are right about the HE Reel's locking mechanism.
Its finicky. You have to toy around with it at first and get it down, but it isn't always reliable. Sometimes it will come up a little bit, but overall, I love this reel! I too wish this locking mechanism was better. -Vinnie |

Reading the posts it, seems to me that the python, HE magaetic reel are the leaders. Yet I know there are others,i.e El Duco and Tannens I'm looking for an all purpose reels that will have locking capability. Should't jam (backlash) and be easy to repair and service.
can anyone list attributes of currently available reels so that I can make an informed decision. thanks, John

Sorry I am new to reels. What do you mean by locking reel and a non locking reel. I need one for a trick but I want one for vanishing and floating. Like him I was thinking The Magnetic Reel by Henry Evans.

Bentley, Locking means that you can have it already setup, and hanging out of your sleeve without having to hold the end. It can just dangle there until you need it - and then when you need to use it, you grab the end, extend it a little bit to deactivate the locking mechanism, and it's ready to be shot up your sleeve when you let go of it.
The reel your thinking of floating something with would be an ITR (Invisible Thread Reel). There are no reels that do both floating and vanishing. Unless your doing ti on stage, but that may be a little risky. -Vinnie |

On a parallel side, I'd like to construct the Jay Scott Berry's principle with reels, where the reel brings tou props instead od pulling them up sleeves.(I own the french version of some lecture notes by him).
Do someone experienced this? If so, what kind of pull would you recommend to construct the device? As for regular reel, I'm also interested by your contributions as I search too such a good reel, silent, blocking, etc...^^ Thanks, |
