Going off to study is OK...but in the real world of entertainment:

It would be better to take one or two effects and work them over and over with an audience, exploring what works with you and the audience, then taking one or two more and doing the same until you have workable material to fashion into a show.

I almost never see any one simply go off and work on an hour act on their own and come back with success.
