This fellow's name is Kevin Thompson. He was one of my assistants for several years at the Texas Renaissance Festival and Scarborough Faire. This video is about 10 years old, possibly older.
I remember when he made it. He told me that he had been practicing his cups and balls and that he was videotaping it to make sure everything looked natural. He looked away from the monitor at just the wrong moment when this occurred. Later, when he viewed the tape, he thought it would be a candidate for America's Funniest Home Videos. He actually made some money off this.

I just love his response; "I have devestated myself!"
That pretty much says it all. I would be curious about one thing. He didn't see the ball roll, I get that. But I'm wondering <how> the second cup, the one with <two> balls under it, wasn't supposed to have a ball.

That was great! This is actually my favourite routine of the cups and balls (even if it was by accident). I love the fact that the audience is "one ahead" of the magician.

Hey Nick,
Sure missed you at the Fremantle Street Festival over the Easter weekend here in Perth. Magic Brian was OK, however I still feel he didn't hold a candle to your act. All the best, JoJo

Great video. Yes, I've fooled myself before, with a vanishing cane. Was practicing the vanish rolled up in newspaper, later when I went to retrieve the cane it wasn't where it was supposed to be, nor anywhere else I could find. In fact it was quite a few months later before I accidentally discovered where it had gone. For a long time I was beginning to think that I really did make it disappear.

That's the next move for many C&B routines. And photius, what is it with those Vanishing Canes? I've lost my cane so many times I'm thinking of attaching it to a pull!

I did a sponge ball routine once in a theatre after the show. (My wife was performing.) I got to the part where I had two sponge balls in my hands. I held them between the first finger and the thumb whereupon they sqirted out of my hands and went under the stadium style seats of the theater never to be seen again by mortal eyes.
I stood there for a second and said; "And then they disappear! Let me show you a coin trick."

Well, you guys wouldn't believe how many half dollars have clogged up the sink in the bathroom upstairs. It seems every time I practice a coin move in front of that mirror, the coin flies right into the drain. There must be a magnet down there or something...
After loosing god knows how many coins, I now use the mirror in my parents room. It's amazing he didn't see that roll. At first, I thought it was just a really bad slieght. The chances of that happening without him seeing it are VERY slim. That was hilarious. |

If you're going to practice in front of the bathroom sink, a stopper in the sink drain just might be called for!

Thanks Nick. Great to catch a moment like that on film, even though they happen often...My first experience? I was about seven years old and my brother was chasing me because I stole his dice. He cornered me in front of a dresser, so I stuck my hands behind my back quickly and dropped the dice to the floor. I brought my hands back up and showed him the di was gone. Of course, he checked every inch under the dresser, and I had to help. THEY WERE GONE! It was like Magic to us both. Six months later, I'm sitting in class and reach into my back pocket...wah? that's where it went! And the seed was planted.
