What is the difference between a half dollar shell and an expanded shell? I need a shell that completely covers a half dollar. I have one that just goes half way down the edge of the shell not completely covering the sides. Does an expanded shell completely cover the shell? Thanks for the info

The difference between the two is an expanded shell fits over a normal coin,
where the other shell is norman coin size and requires a cut down coin, or coins. I've sure it is discussed elsewere ! The depth of the expanded shell varies; and you will have to talk with the makers. |

This prior thread might help you. Because an expanded shell half dollar has to be expanded to be able to fit over a regular half dollar, the edges of the expanded shell will never completely cover a regular half dollar. There will always be a slight portion of the regular coin exposed. But to me it's so minimal, it's not an issue with me. You might get slightly more coverage with an unexpanded shell, but then you will have to also purchase the re-milled coins because the unexpanded half dollar shell will not fit over a regular half dollar. You have to weigh the advantages and disvantages and make your own decision. I have both shells myself and like both, however, I do use the unexpanded more often. |
