Hi everybody,
am I right or do you think the same ? I saw at The Complete Book of Magic ( by Walter Gibson, from 1978 ( or The Encyclopedia of Magic and Conjuring ) stage illusion called Miss Boots by Oveete (edited by Glen E. Towns). The assistant is dressed (especialy boots and gloves) nearly the same as in David Copperfield´s illusion the Blade. Just seems to me that he picked up idea, perfect it, polished routine and ... cool new visual illusion was here Or is there some illusion designer that build that one (The Blade) for him from the very start ? Thank you |

There was a thread recently that brought up the vertical cutting and the book you mention. I can't just find it but its in the last week or so. Maybe you'll have better luck...

You might want to take a look at some of my earlier work. Back in 1988 I came up with an illusion we called "Any Way You Slice It" later simply known as the Vertical Sawing. There are pics of this illusion on my website and I think the video is still available on Abbott's Magic Get-Together 1992. All of this predates Copperfield's version.

It was mentioned by David Goldrake in this thread:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=7 I remember seeing the Blade live before it was filmed for TV. It totally blew me away. The performance was a little different as both side of the boxes were opened at the same time, girl waving from both sides, etc, and the box wasn't momentarily joined midway through the performance. I always thought that part a little weak in the TV presentation. Plus her costume wasn't quite as futuristic... she was wearing just a plain flowery dress. Just goes to show the development of an illusion even when DC is touring. Oh, and Steve's vertical sawing is great... I have his Abbotts 1992 on tape somewhere in my collection. Nice pyro effect when the box is separated from what I remember. Matt |

It's not a file ... it's an old VHS tape that was put out by Magicians Video Network. I think it's still available here and there .. I've even seen it on ebay, just look for Abbotts Magic Get-Together 1992.
There is even a short interview on Youtube that may contain a shot of the illusion. Just look up my name and it should pop up. I have yet to figure out how to get video online. I can burn CD's now .. that's progress! Steve |

Twinkie Time is the best part of the video.
To stay on topic here, the sawing in half is very cool. DC took it to the next level with the arms moving and so forth. Not sure if Steve does that, but it's still dang cool. Like the guitar thru girl, too. That is tight! Steve, keep up the progress. You know soon those floppy disks you have are going to be outdated. Same with your cassettes and A-tracks or 8-tracks. It is so old, I can't remember.

Our sound is on Mini-Disk, and yeah...that's kinda out of date, but that's just me. Glad you liked my work back in my rockin' years. It's still pretty amazing looking back.
I still do most of my layout work on an old Apple Performa computer...no joke. Still stuck in the '80s... Steve |

Thanks, everybody.
Matt, thanks for the thread. It is mentioned there, but I was looking for information, if somebody knows something exactly about The Blade. Thanks for YouTube link, and glad for the info about "both boxes opened in one moment" version. Steve, your rock magic looks great, like an enhanced concert of Kiss, and I like it very much. When I am looking at illusions, I try to think of them in some other way - how to present them, or just make some illusion look like another with different ending, etc. So I was trying to find how DC got to that illusion, how was the brain behind, etc. |

Mendoza built the Blade prop for David. I think it was around $35,000. I remember Mark Wilson telling me how he lectured David about showing both halves of the girl at the same time. He thought it was too obvious. Other magi said this as well, so David added the box "bump" to add a bit of possibility.

Craig, then Mark's lecture paid off 'cause the presentation that David does is perfect. Wish he would put it back into his show.

The bump has always ruined this illusion for me. I can understand not showing both halves at the same time, but why not show one half, then cross to the other half - still separated - and show it. That still leaves some possibility. The bump is sooooo weak. Given the choice between the two, I'd rather have an effect that was easy to figure out, but looked perfect, than a completely baffling illusion that looks fishy. Of course, I may be an oddball. I'm probably one of the few magicians that can't stand Steinmeyer's Origami.
