Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that Craig Matsuoka (member here) just came up with a comprehensive E-book on card splitting and gaff-making using the DMT method. That means his modus operandi doesn't rely on the use of rubber cement, but on dry mount tissue. I had a few talks with him about his method, and I already gave it a few tries, and it rocks! Great results, crisp, and FLAT gaffed cards! I haven't read the E-book yet, but being aware of the basic method (and having experienced it) and knowing that he goes over great details, finesses, and additional tips to make more complex gaffs, I am sure that the whole thing is a must-have if you feel like making your own stuff regarding gaffed cards. Take a look here: http://www.google.com/base/a/1577887/D12030218218360441426 (BTW, I have no interest in this. He helped me with my card splitting, and I think his work really deserves this little plug.) See you! Jonathan. |

You go through the rubber cement phase...and then you discover Dry Mount Tissue.
It's an epiphany, I tell ya! Cheers!

I'm from Hong Kong, and I have not heard of or seen Dry Mount Tissue....not to mention what it's actually called/named in Chinese....but it sounds so interesting! I'm a card splitter as well, and too, had gone thru the same frustrations with Rubber Cement....really looking forward for something new. Is there any more info I can look into concerning DMT? I would love to get my hands on these and test with it....very curious.

...maybe outdated, since it is easier today to PRINT the needed cards instead of splittin'n'gluing. Just a guess.

Bernd,
I read the description of the item and, as a "bonus", there is a method to print on Bicycle stock without removing the finish. I've tried the method in the Versatile Monte DVD, and the finish certainly wasn't the same. So if the method for printing on the cards doesn't work for me, at least I have a guide that will make me better at splitting. George |

But Cardmaker, you told me that you do not print yourself, but only split cards. So have you now converted to printing?

@George
Splitting is SOMETIMES the better way to go, e.g. split cards with 1 straight cut in the middle of the face. I wouldn't print THESE. If possible, I prefer splitting over printing. @pegasus You must have me mistaken. I've printed on Bicycle stock, since...I forgot. :-( I do print. PS: I just ordered my copy from Craig.

For me, splitting is the way to go. After some practice, re-glued split cards look perfect, but printing can be difficult to achieve a good results that last.

I received my copy of the ebook earlier this week. Craig is also producing a "tip" sheet, which he sends to purchasers of the disc. I purchased a few additional items yesterday, and will likely be working from Craig's book this weekend. I'll probably make a few adjustments to his method (e.g. the squaring of the cards and rounding of the corners, which I don't care for). But from my first two readings, I can tell that there are some clever tips for gaffers within the pages of this book. Anyone that has not already purchased a copy of Marty "Martini" Grams' DVD, "The Art of Card Splitting," and/or his notes, "Lickety Split," really ought to start there, as I still consider those to be the bibles of gaffing. I'll also have a bit of an advantage by already owning one of Todd Lassen's Gaffing Geniis, but those without one should be able to produce similar results thanks to Craig's clear instruction.
My true interest in purchasing the ebook was in finding a few tips on the alignment of split cards when using DMT. I wasn't the least bit disappointed. I'll share my additional thoughts on the process sometime next week... |

I just looked on eBay for mounting tissue. You can get a lifetime supply (2 feet by 50 feet), which is enough (if my calculations are correct) to do 2,400 cards for $56 plus shipping ($6-10 depending on what state you live in).
I never heard of it till this post, either.

I'd like to thank everyone for supporting this project and for all the great feedback and encouragement. It's very satisfying when people contact me with their success stories.

Hi folks,
Just wanted to let everyone know that the second edition of The Gaff Factory is now ready for distribution. Along with some minor corrections, I have added an improved method for constructing Hofzinser transparent cards. If you've already purchased the first edition and would like to upgrade your copy at no charge, please contact me at the email address that appears on the last page of the ebook. Thanks! |

It's $20, but it's the real deal, no exaggeration.
THE GAFF FACTORY: A comprehensive dry-mounting tutorial- http://www.google.com/base/a/1577887/D12030218218360441426 This is very professional. You won't believe the detail. He gives the sources to buy everything, and he has picture after picture of how to do everything. VERY impressive. This is clearly an important addition to this skill's knowledge base. If you look on that Google link, you'll see there's a downloadable zip file to preview the style of the book. From the Acrobat sample: "This is only an eleven page sample of THE GAFF FACTORY in low resolution. The actual book has seventy-eight pages supplemented by 117 color photographs and 23 illustrations. Also included in this package is a file containing vector graphics of card indexes and pips which you can manipulate..." Compare what you see with the table of contents, and you'll get an idea of how complete this booklet is. This is an extremely valuable resource, folks. - Steve Hook

I was wondering if it is possible to make a Hofzinser card if you use dry mount? Or would it only block the light from going through the card?

I'm gonna get this. I just ordered a Lassen Card Gaffing Genii, and this, I think, will help loads.

Joshua,
You absolutely won't be disappointed. The Lassen Genii is second to none!! I like it so much that I ordered a second one. I've been working with it for several months now and have gotten very comfortable with it. Please feel free to let me know if I can assist you in any way. Best regards, Evan (aka Magiguy) |

I did the first batches of DMT cards the last few days. With some practice and clever thinking, there is absolutely no need for that Lassen Genii (helper).
A jig with a right angle; that's it. And much cheaper... Once I receive my Coverite iron, I will make masses of cards. It is a pity that I have to import all that needed stuff from overseas, since here in Germany things are either not known (DMT) or 4-5x more expensive than any US online dealer. But hey,.....I have to import the cards as well. I should move to US and work there....
