I had never seen Al Koran perform. I am very grateful to Richie Dagger for providing it. A few comments:
1. Koran has an outstanding sophistication and ease of performance. He looks to be a true pro. 2. On the other hand, I am surprised that these effects fly. For example, it is very odd that in taking out a sheet of paper from his inside jacket pocket, Koran introduces the sheet of paper as being the only sheet of paper he has. He then throws it away and pulls out a second sheet of paper. To me, that was a mess. Then there is no apparent look at the first 8 pieces of the paper as he flings them from his open palm. Clearly one must think that the word "ideas" might have been circled on each piece of paper. So while I have a great admiration for Koran's showmanship and smooth performance, I need some conviction on the effects themselves. Gianni |

I'm not at all surprised at the way these effects fly! I used a Koran medallion routine for a long time, and it always played incredibly strong.
Not to be rude (by any means), but you may be thinking like a mentalist and a performer and not a lay person. Upon further viewing, I don't see any kind of mess. It almost seems like a throw away comment and action (while handling the paper). You can tell by the host (as well as the audience reactions) that these people were very involved and also "fooled" very badly. I think it was a fantastic performance. Best, j.

I think is T.A.Waters who wrote in his MM&M great book, that Ed Sullivan exclaimed "This is one of the most amazing things I ever saw!" after having seen Al Koran perform the newspaper effect. Not bad if you consider Ed Sullivan had seen so many things in his TV career...
And - while I consider myself a sufficiently good performer - I am envious of the ease and calm (and of the inner smile) with which Koran is performing. Once again, thinking as a Mentalist or not, is not an issue here. As long as I will not see Gianni (or myself) perform with the same style and class as Koran, the other things are pretty much irrelevant. I have seen some video of Fogel doing something that most people here would easily label as "not convincing" yet it flew by to the onlookers and Fogel was another masterclass act in himself. Once again - and I don't care if I offend anyone since this is NOT my intention - show me your best Mentalism effect and - if I want - probably I will find something to criticize about it. But, if you will have the same style of Koran or the masterclass of Fogel, I will at least admire (and envy) you for that... Also - and I know I'm swimming against current but I do not care - give me some Fogel or Koran anyday rather than Derren Brown, Chris Angel and all of this TV editing / cut craze ...
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

Are there anymore clips out there of some of the greats?

Such a classy performer. You don't see that much any more. Maybe there is room for a new one.

I agree with Lord of the Horses and if that means we are both swimming against the current so be it. These old showmen like Fogel and Koran beat modern mentalists into a cocked hat. There is just no comparison.
However he mentions video footage of Fogel. I didn't know there was any. I would kill to see it. Is there anything online anywhere? |

Or they all just assumed it was a gag, a joke, a funny made by the ever excited and bubbly Mr. Koran!
Perhaps a slight poke in the ribs at 'normal' magicians who are forever saying "I have one and only one card/paper/prediction/suite!" and in doing so put a big, neon flashing sign up that says “I AM LIEING!”

The point that I was trying to make was that a spectator might legitimately wonder about the other 8 pieces of paper that were thrown on the floor. They were thrown down very fast, with not even a cursory convincer that they were innocent. That was my point. Whether an audience member correctly guesses the method used is not relevant. What is relevant is that an opening is allowed for an explanation, even if incorrect. That was my point. I have always favored effects along the lines that Michael Close has articulated: effects that will play to the smartest person in the room. Gianni |

There is an old saying by Al Baker. "Don't run when nobody's chasing you" I suspect that might be relevant here.

I don't know if I was watching the same clip as everyone else watched, but I thought that it was a pretty lame performance. It was dull, had little impact, no build up for a climax.
