I just want to throw this out. Myself I'm a beginner, who is taking a home-study course, and have read one book thus far and now I'm reading McGill's book. I'd like to find a mentor and learn anyway I can in my situation. I think I might even get into Hypnotherapy, as well. I've always loved Psychology, and in my career testing it said I'd be good in the "Helping Profession", like social work...ect. My Psychiatrist, and others in the profession have said "Why don't you get into this feild as you seem to have the understanding & patience for it". I was going to get a two year degree in Psychology, but the financial aid forms were like foriegn to me...oh well. My MAIN LOVE, is Close-Up Magic (Cards Mostly), and Mentalism. I want to add Entertainment Hypnosis to my act. I'm also into Escapology and years ago when I lived in Florida I did a lot of escapes, some underwater. I've been into Magic / Mentalism / Escapes 15 years now. I'm a Street Magician mostly.
Anyway how long have you been performing Hypnosis? Do you do Hypnotherapy as well. What (if any) degrees / certificates in Hypnosis do you have? What is your performing name? I'm just curious and it would be nice to kind of have a tiny bio of the Hypnotist here as they are great ones here. How else did you learn, like Self-Taught, as the really good Alex Duvall, or were you mentored, or both? Thanks, Ed, (Eddini).

I have a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Was exposed to it in Graduate School, but no real instruction. Some years later when working in a Medical School I had contact with a psychiatrist on the faculty who was pretty well versed in it and used it some in his practice. After working with him a couple of years I came to the conclusion that with they type of therapeutic practice I was engaged in, there was actually little practical use for hypnosis, but was a facinating study. I don't do hypnosis shows or stage act, but I find many of the accounts in this forum facinating, often stimulating further research and study on my part.

I've found hypnotism to be a very useful tool, both on stage and in the clinic. I've been involved in it for many years, although I do not have an academic degree.
I am one of only two Certified Instructors in my State and am in the process of opening a State Licensed School, the only one in my State. (What a pain the paperwork is!) It is my belief that doing stage hypnotism should only be after you learn how to do the basic clinical work. This better prepares you for all kinds of situations and how to protect both the volunteer on stage and yourself. I suggest you find an NGH hypnotist near you (NGH.net) and ask to be mentored. The NGH has a fantastic convention in August and you will never find a more sharing group of individuals than there. In three days you can select from over 200 classes to attend. They also have some stage show classes, one of which I teach, and three stage shows on Friday night. As for clinical hypnotism, it is a wonderful tool, not a magic pill. Nothing happens unless the client truly wants it to. I see clients regularly and enjoy the work. I specialize in pain management, primarily tinnitus, which is "ringing in the ears." IF you don't know what that is, be thankful and ask a musician! Ormond McGill was a true friend of mine and he is sorely missed. Learn what he wrote and follow it closely. He was without a doubt, IMO, the best author to ever write a book on stage hypnosis. Best wishes! |
