PENTAGRAM
Peter Warlock stated in it that PENTAGRAM was a successor to JINX. |

Mike,
I am quickly approaching 1,000 posts and, even though it is a bit lame (MORE than a bit, I admit!), I want my last few before 1,000 to be "special". So, please keep that in mind and realize that I really believe what I am about to say... Don't wait for Paolo's stuff. It really is amazing. Every effect in his books is really a brilliant combination of methods, ideas, and techniques. As such, every effect can (and should, IMHO) spawn dozens of ideas for your own use. That is the MATERIAL. Something that is also of particular importance to me is customer service and his customer service is also second to none. Not only is it rapid, you see how active he is on this board, always sharing ideas and tips while also being a resource for questions about his books. How often does any product or book that you get that (outside of the Café, of course)? Furthermore, Paolo is honestly a great guy and I have always enjoyed my interactions with him. Now is perhaps not the time, but in a future thread relating to his work, I'd love to discuss some specifics. It is for all these reasons that I must really stress that you don't wait to get his stuff (albeit, I have to wait to save more $$ myself, LOL, but I do have some of his work to think about while I save). I apologize if this post sounds a bit more serious or somber than usual, but, as I said, I want my last few posts before 1,000 to be worth something and this is something I feel strongly about. In any case, good luck everybody and I recommend all the works discussed in this thread. Don't wait, go improve your act now! -Carlos

I don't really want to wait, But I hardly ever get ebooks...I just like to have books. And a collection of all books in one would be great (and probably cheaper). If he is deciding to put them into one big book, I will wait because I have enough material right now but I love going through new stuff. There's so many things I want to get, I don't know where to start...lol.

It's apparent by reading various posts and questions around the net regarding when Collectors is going to reprint #1-3, and #5 that they've been saying 'soon' for at least 5 years now. Luckily, I get just as much, if not more enjoyment out of the search as I do with the purchase! |

I have a CD version from Lybrary.com, but prefer the real books. (I also have a set of the unbound magazines. Yes, I'm a fan!)

Both Jinxs (including the new Jinxs) and Pentagram have been scanned and can be bought on CD-ROM. Apart from them many other old goodies, such as the Phoneix, Pabular, Spellbinder, etc, can be had on CD-ROM. Some of the collections have been professionally OCR-scanned and converted into searchable PDF-files, while others have just been scanned page for page and turned into a non-searchable PDF-file.
Like so many here I prefer to page around in real books and magazines, but I think it’s great to be able to get complete collections at good prices without having to use endless space to store them. Re. MAGICK I bought the complete edition from CW some 20-years ago and completed with vol IV when it was published some years after the first three. At that time it was one of the most expensive things I’d ever bought, but over the years I’ve never ever regretted doing it, as the books have given both hours of interesting reads and insight in clever ideas! I am a bit surprised no one here ever mentions the three volumes of Burling “Volta” Hull’s, “The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism” ? Even if they can’t be compared to MAGICK any more than Syzygy can, I’ve always found them interesting and full of good effects and goodies. All the Best Magnus |

The New Jinx should not have been scanned. The rights for it are owned by Ray Goulette, Magic Art Book Company (original copywrite date, 1987), although he may have just transferred them to Meir Yedid. Copywrite laws in the US are now 75 years after the death of the original copywrite holder (Ray) and he is still kicking, so they would not have passed into public domain.
Any electronic version should be considered pirated, illegal and unethical bootleg material. Magnus, if you can provide the names of those selling the New Jinx on CD, I will gladly contact the correct copywrite holder and end this theft. Tony |

That original 'Jinx' CD-ROM put out by the Houdini folks seems like an amazingly good deal at only $20.00 for the entire run of issues.
Does the 'old' Jinx contain quality material, or was that confined to the 'New Jinx' , which isn't on CD-ROM? |

The Jinx contains some amazing material. Practical Mental Effects contains most of the cream from the Jinx.

The original Jinx is so much more than the effects it contains. You have the Annemann editorials, his little secret messages, magic history of the era, and much more. Plus reading through a periodical gives you some idea of the creative flow and helps you get into the thought process more than a jumble of isolated effects. Ted's personality.
Same thing with the original manuscripts making up Mind, Myth, & Magic. There was a progression of thought that is somewhat lost by the volumes being part of a larger whole. At least for me. Get the Jinx read it - you won't regret it. |

Rightly so Tony, and I stand to be corrected as I've mixed things a bit, as it's the Phoneix that include the New Phoneix, as the Jinxs is only the Jinxs and the 5 programmes and nothing more. Sorry for that. All the Best Magnus |

It's interesting to see how many "new" effects have been taken from these classic mags. For example Dean Dill's Box is in Pentagram. I am sure you fine fellows(ladies too) have many more examples of "new" commercial effects revamped from. Jinx, Phoenix, Pentagram etc. Just goes to show you that the classic stuff still counts.

Page 73, Vol. 4, No. 10 (at least my digital version). Also, page 345, Paul Curry's Worlds Beyond, as I recall.

No original artwork, page numbers are all wrong, so you can't reference effects. If that is all you can get, then go that way but the original is better. I wonder why they didn't just reprint the mags "as is"? Seance was reprinted beautifully. I wonder if they don't own the copyright and just rewrote the whole thing? To answer your question, I believe that most of the effects in Magick are usable ideas. Especially the later issues. Some really rock solid workhorses. James
