Hi guys,

I've been a lurker on the forum for a couple of months, and have signed up to ask for some help with finding the above effect.

I do realize that this may appear a particularly amateurish question, but I have been quite seriously into card magic for a couple of years now, am looking to move into mentalism and was impressed by this effect (seen at a wedding - and not performed particularly well). I cannot however find it anywhere.

The effect:

The spectator shuffled and chose one of five 'shape' ESP cards, the remaining cards were put on the table, the mentalist reads the spec's mind and identifies the selection. No real problem there - nothing I can't do myself (I am of course slightly psychic by the way)

However, the mentalist repeated this 3 or 4 times with different guests, but then in response to accusations of a marked deck, the effect was performed under the table, completely out of view of the mentalist. At this point I sat up and went.... 'what the...?'

I have the sneaky suspicion that people are calling me a stupid muggle at this point, I am sure it's the most basic thing in the world but it's an effect I would like to learn. I've put it under 'self-working' as that's my best guess.

I've been looking to buy this for a couple of months, but need a name or at least a direction. Any ideas?

Thanks all,

There are several possibilities. From a basic card stack (which would require some peak or read opportunity), to a fairly sophisticated electronic device (which would be my guess). Would need more detail to know for sure.

Welcome to the Café, beibei and don't worry about asking dumb questions: we all do!

In order to help, we (or at least I) would need a more detailed description of what the nagician did, especially during the "under the table" section.

(BTW - as you get more experience, you'll learn better how to describe EVERYTHING you see!)

Did the spec shuffle under the table, look at one under the table, and keep all the cards under the table all the time? If that's the case, then I think you have seen real magic and I would direct the performer to James Randi's $1 million challenge.

Otherwise, there's a wrinkle and that'll be the clue to the "how?"

There are LOADS of tricks with this plot, which doesn't really help you, but - on the basis of what you have told us - it could be done many ways.

One other thing - you say it wasn't performed "particularly well"? I'd say it was performed at least well enough to persuade you to join the Café to find out more!! good luck in your search.

Good response Ross ...
I agree, we need a detailed account of the routine which happened under the table.

You might not be a million miles away BB when you suspect a marked deck.
Don't forget, there are marked decks which are also stacked too.
Which means you do not necessarily have to see the actual card chosen ... just see what has not ... just a single card will do it.

I want to be careful what I reveal here, but the reason I suggested it could involve electronics, is that there is one specific item/system on the market that comes with an ESP deck as its main effect. And it could be performed quite 'sloppily.'

I own and (only occasionally) use the system, and it will do everything described. But I would need to know specifics of how the handling went, once the cards were raised from below the table, to be sure.

I think wulfiesmith has come up with a workable solution. BB, take the ideas here and see what you can develop. Make sure you do a better job than the one that you saw - all the best.
