Wow! That's very interesting about the height... assuming the wikipedia entries are right about the relative thicknesses, the only possible explanation would be wear on the Morgans, right? What else could it be?

That's what I'm guessing? No doubt my Morgans are worn and smoother. Funny!

The answer is Wikipedia is incorrect. Ikes and Morgans and Peace Dollars are approximately 3mm in thickness. Wikipedia lists Peace and Ikes dollars as 2mm. That is incorrect. It lists Morgans as 3.1mm which is correct. I have 4 non-worn Peace dollars on me and I measured them with a ruler and they measure 12mm for all four or about 3mm a coin. Justin's measurements confirm that with his Ikes and Morgans. Morgans and Peace dollars are of course heavier than Ikes because Ikes are clad and the Morgans and Peace dollars are near 90% pure silver.

I believe Wikipedia is accurate about the height of the Ikes. My measurements are similar and Ikes are clearly shorter than uncirculated morgans. that's one of the reasons I like them - they are easier to palm because they are thinner.

I'd agree with Justin... actually he beat me to the punch on his post. The audience doesn't care. In my experience the old coins draw more attention and break the flow of the magic. Old coins just aren't seen that often and most are intrigued by them. For that reason I prefer to use newer coins myself.

If you are going to use coins no one is familiar with, why use dollars at all? How about doubloons? Pieces of eight? Coins from exotic lands that may or may not have ever existed?

When I have used Morgans, I have people shout and think they are fake or trick coins. No one I have ever worked for knows what they are.
So I use Ike's, as I grew up with them, and most people I do coin work for are about my age, and remember them, and I have the same ones I had from the '70's. I have a story about practicing rolling the coins across my fingers while watching '70's TV. If I dropped one, my little sister grabbed it and ran...and so on,(true story), now I have 3 left, and perform ''3 coins at my right finger tips vanishing and appearing in the left hand at the finger tips''. And I love to do the muscle pass with it, really toughens your hands. One young man I met carries one, his dad gave it to him, it is minted the same year he was born. I easily worked it into my routine. Ike's all the way! Now I am doing misers dream for my stage shows with the NEW Copper Presidents Dollars. I can get 25 of them for...$25!!! And I just ordered a folding one for a coin wand I just got, that should be fun. ACE

I also let people inspect the coins whenever possible and I keep ungaffed versions of everything, then switch in and out. Some great coins: Balboas, Bolivars, Australian Crowns, British Half Crowns, Isle of Man Half Pennies, Cuban Pesos, Florins and Thalers. |

So, what coins are more thicker, Morgans or Ike Dollars? I'm practicing with Ike and they seem very thicker. I have big hands but classic palm 4 coins with this it's hard.
I'm hopping that with Morgans will be easier.

I think Octopus Sun used the phrase "old greasy Ikes" before, and it rang incredibly true to me. Morgans just feel good on the hands, as compared to any clad coin.

I absolutely love my Morgan's over my Ike's. the Ike's are good though for outside so no fear of dropping
