Hey gang,
I just picked up a square circle, and I would like to use more of a story line patter rather than just a "lookie here". Any ideas out there that you're willing to share?

Here is the problem. It's a little like asking for patter for a thumbtip or double-sided card. It's just a prop.
I find it easier and more productive to think about narrative and emotional content first...THEN the patter to make it work...THEN the tricks, and only then do a I think about props. Poor Chance Wolf will attest to this! It took me over a year to actually BUY the *** Funhouse! |

Come up with something interesting to produce from it, and you can work backwards from there...that's another approach. I have a GIGANTIC, HUMONGOUS (like a size 80...NO, they don't fit me!) men's underwear to produce, and that's where I started.

I have never used patter for this effect. When I use it, I use it as an opener, and it is always done to music. Last time I performed this, I used a cool James Bond mix. Last thing I produce is a hat coil that naturally makes a mess on the floor. This leads to the production of an appearing broom, which I use to sweep up.

Hi MagicBH:
What type of Square Circle is it? Can you give us a basic description of the apparatus? Ron |

"Patter"...what is patter?
Look at the box....think about what your audience will think when they see it. Do people still use these godforsaken contraptions????

Marvello,
Do you perform with one of these things, still? What kinds of reactions do you get?

I don't do much magic for just kids, usually families at outdoor gigs. Square Circle? You gotta be real 1970's white-man-with-a-fro to be hauling around this piece of a dinosaur relic. All that spray-painted trash went the way of the tuxedo on a performer... Kids see you with a bow tie around here, and they'll grab their guns, man...
Another question...after looking through here, what's with "Kidabra"? What exactly does belonging to this group do for you, the working man? Is this just for kiddie people, or can family guys like me join?

That sounds really nice, Marvello. You keep up that great work! I'll look into the Kidabra freaks thing... Keep it real, peace out.
Oh, yeah, one more thing... You ain't gotta wear no "bow tie" to be in Kidabra, do you? I see all these red bow ties on some of these Kidabra people's pictures... Is that a secret magician's society thing? Just jabbin' at you, man!

Samuel Patrick Smith has got a excellent routine for this prop, called "Ernie the Elf". I use it in ALL my Christmas shows. Sure, it is a once a year effect, but by using your brain, it can quite easily be adapted to all year round (birthday present, etc.).

I use the square circle as a running gag. In my princess party, I have a castle/tower square circle, and a puppet (Princess Adorabelle). My whole show is Adorabelle and I turning the birthday girl into a real princess. Adorabelle is a bossy little thing, and the square circle is her castle. Everything the birthday girl needs to become a princess comes out of Adorabelle's inventory, at least a piece of a trick that leads us to pick up something else. I have several different themed shows, and since I started using the square circle as a running item, my shows seem to flow much better. So no, it's not an antiquated spray-painted piece of junk that $50 magicians use. Maybe it is if it's used "lookie here, lots of silks!" No one but magicians care about silks.

All of my gospel routines are over half silk magic, and it goes over great. I also use a lot of silk stuff in my birthday shows. Of course, I use real routining, not just "watch this hanky disappear in my fist" type of thing. It's all in the performance. If you are not good with silks, or don't have a good routine, I can see how you would think "no one but magicians care about silks." But with a solid routine and a quality entertainer, silks are a wonderful tool. Just wanted to clear that up, Mike

Just find some really cool, fun music and really get into the dramatic side of the trick. You can make it funny or serious.
Your choice, I do serious. Anyway, hope this helps. Best, Brandon

Mike,
I'm sorry. I didn't phrase that properly at all. I meant no audience cares about silks on their owns as silks, whereas magicians do. There are some things that will get an audience going just because of the object, and I meant to say that silks are not one of them. I hope that clears up what I'm saying! I personally don't care for silk magic, but my father has enormous success with them in polished routines as I'm sure you do. I apologize for the confusion. Alexa |

Please .... please....oh please do not use someone elses routine? Please take the effort and energy to be creative and to start thinking in a creative way. Doing someone elses routine is the easy way out. It does nothing more then create magic clones. Start to think outwardly and away from magic for your ideas for routines. Do not always be so eager to just run to your magic shop and buy a full routine patter included. Do not run to your videos or DVds and steal a routine you see there.
Think and learn to create your own routines based upon your character and who you are and your style of performance. Your audiences deserve that much from you and the magical arts will grow from it. My 2 cents worth. Kyle
