This may be a very elementary question about the color changing knives, but I have not seen it addressed anywhere.
In showing both sides of a knife to be the “same” color, the small exposed area of the knife blade (where the fingernail catch is) starts out at the bottom of the knife, but then will be at the top of the knife when the “opposite” side of the knife is shown, due to the flip-over move. This shouldn't make sense to a spectator if you are apparently just turning the knife over, and seems to me to be a fatal "tell" in the handling of the trick. Most paddle tricks do not have this problem because both edges of the paddle are exactly the same, but that’s not the case with a penknife. However, people are obviously performing the color changing knives to great effect, and it seem to be a favorite close-up trick. Do folks just not notice this discrepancy, or am I missing something? Nope, they don't notice. As in Whit Haydn's routine, which I'm sure you've seen already, there is not that much emphasis on the knife "changing colors" as much as it is "changing places." Plus, once it's in a closed hand, it's impossible for them to know which side the blade is on anyway. Spinning it in the hand works too as the larger visual distraction of the change draws their attention away from the subtle differences of blade position.

On the topic, can anyone recommend a decent set that's fairly inexpensive? I don't want crap, but I don't want the finest set money can buy. Something that will do the job and last a while.
Thanks, Shawn |

The Mogar knives are the best, and not that expensive relatively speaking. One advantage over cheaper knives is that it's designed with one side textured (I think the term is "jigged") so you can tell where you are by feel.
I was just going to add for those who haven't seen Whit's routine, they should Click Here.

Thanks, Dave, for the info. It seems amazing to me, but I guess this falls into the "don't run if you're not being chased" category! SETH

It looks like standard knives in any color combination of single or double are only $20 each. The Stag handle knives are a bit more at $30 but you really only need one of those, plus a matching single color if you're doing Whit's two knife routine.

Dave,
I checked out the site, and they look nice. Plus, Murphy's carries them, so I can get them from any of my usual dealers. Thanks for the info. Shawn |

I agree 100% with Dave. Joe Mogar's knives rule. He's a great guy, and stands behind his product. The discrepancy is never noticed.

I recommend MOgar's "stag sensation". the knives are great. those knives can be used with many of the popular routine.
for those interested, I have them available on my website with a free leather case included.

Doc Eason has a killer, simple routine that uses only one knife and no switching needed. Can't beat it for a COMMERCIAL, entertaining routine.

If I'm lucky, maybe I'll see him do it this weekend.
Saturday night at the Castle! It's our anniversary too, I wonder if Doc has something special for that?

To answer your question. I have performed the color changing knives almost weekly (on average). No one has ever made mention of any discrepency. Perhaps my move (as taught by Joe Mogar) with the knife kept parellel to the floor and not waved all about hides this discrepency better than some other moves.
Further, I don't spend a lot of time proving that both sides are the same color.

Some of us prefer the cheap old Enardoes. I seem to recall that Larry Davidson (Scripted Insanity) agreed with me on this choice.

I actually think there is a little less "flash" with the cheap enardoes. but I still prefer the Mogar knives. The Enardoe's also have that keen "locking" feature that makes for a great gag.

Dave: Happy Anniversary and be sure to "waltz" with Doc.
This should be a KILLER night at the Castle with Steve Valentine (possibly the best-ever in that room) making a RARE appearance in the closu-up room and Doc downstairs. Tell him Biro said to do the knives for you.

Just got back... Great night! Alas, I didn't see Steve Valentine, but did spend some time with Doc. He parked my wife in the "hot seat" and if it wasn't for the Tequila shots flowing fast and furious in the back row it would have been a killer show. As it was, Doc turned it around and saved it in spite of his audience. Because of that, I didn't do any special requests as it was hard enough as it was. We stayed for the next show and things went MUCH smoother. Got to see his Bill in Lemon, as well as a sort of improvised Sam the Bellhop routine. Things went great until Sam got dyslexia and went to the 546 club for a while. After that it was anyone's guess what would happen next. Again, Doc's professionalism and humor saved the day and everyone had a great time.

Talk about serendipity . . . while looking for something else, I discovered an older thread about the very knife question I had originally raised, you can click HERE to read it.
Fortunately, the answer still appears to be the same, but the detailed discussion there is very helpful. Thanks as always to the Café' folks for their opinions and advice, it's a great resource. SETH
