Hello
I wanted to get into silk magic so I bought Duane Laflins double DVD set on everyone's advice. Now, I was wondering what equipment I should get? I was thinking dye tubes,TT, Silk poke, hank ball is there anything else anyone can recommend?

Mark Fifield

P.S. Can you make your own silks or should you buy them?

Definately buy your silks and talk to Bob Sanders or Ruth Crone Rice. They are just too hard to make.

The hem is the tricky part and I even have a sewing machine that curls hems! Even a fine, ball point needle catches the thread and tears up the nice silk you are working on.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

I like the phantom tube alot, and of course, there's a lot you can do with silks using a change bag.

Also get any of the myriad of production/vanish props such as wonder box, silk cabby, crystal tube, mirror glass, mirror box, etc...

Look to Tarbell for tying false knots.

Go ahead and get the Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic Vol. 1-4. Invaluable for everything about silk magic.

I think a PALMO or two would be something you would want to have.
Think in multiples.

The best advice I can give on buying equipment for silk magic is to read the books first. Then I would consider looking at videos. Pavel should be lecturing near you in the next few months. Be there!

How little equipment your really need may surprise you.

Enjoy your silk magic.

Thanks for the advice, all. I'll get some basic equipment and google "Pavel" for tour lecture dates. Also thank you for the e-mail. Bob.

I agree with Bob - study first. The equipment you buy should depend on the effects you want to present. You shouldn't be working on learning 50 effects at once. Work on a few at a time. Give some thought to how they will fit into a show.

The 'Spectubular' is a great phantom tube principle production device. Google it.
