I'd agree that the only negative thus far is shipping, I ordered and paid for these over a week ago, and according to their website the order is still "processing"...
I also see these are on sale this weekend at HP for $80...

What a class act, I haven't purchased anything mentalist or magic related in a long while but have waited a long time for these so will support one of my favorite mentalist and friends. The performance alone should be well worth these.

What a great set! (although it comes as no surprise)
I would certainly suggest that you order this directly from Richard because of the Bonus Package. Although I'm biased, as my DOUBLE-DOWN casino cards effect appears on it, it is certainly worth the couple of bucks you may save by purchasing it elsewhere. The bonus disk contains four other fully-explained routines, his hypnosis show, and also comes with a great booklet that much further details the Zodiac Revolution routine shown on Disk One and allows you to do much more with it. As always, Richard Osterlind is in a class of his own! I watched disc 1 last night and absolutely lapped up every minute of it. I particularly enjoyed the short interludes of Richard working casually close up with laypeople. The PCT segment alone is pure gold. Richard extends his 'reading' a little with this one and boy does the impact of some additional hits along the way add to the final punch of revealing the name! Also the timing and conversational manner of the reading is awesome to watch. Can't wait to watch the other discs, I was up until midnight last night just studying and going over disc 1.
Another important aspect of this series is the statement Richard makes about working live without camera tricks or stooges. It was great to see a 'pure' live performance. Cheers, Al

I was thinking about getting these DVDs and sadly realized that I better not.
Here is my reasoning. I have been a big fan of MR. Richard Osterlind for years. I have his first VHS and the first set of books he put out with Jeff Busy. Everything in the Video and books are 100% workers! I have always tried to be slightly different from my competition and in this thinking I must not get these DVDs. Look at how many have looked at this thread and how many others have posted here. This does not reflect the many others who will buy these DVDs and don’t know about the magic café. My thinking is that everyone will start doing the effects that is on the DVDs (all three sets) and it will be hard to judge one from the other. Image trying to get a booking and the client tells you that they have another guy who does mostly the same thing that you do! This cheapens the performer. We are just becoming a COPY CAT of each other. Do not get my wrong because I would really love to get theses DVDs. But, I feel that I must go elsewhere and find material less known. How else is one to be different from the pack unless he takes a different path? IMHO The effects on all of MR. Richard Osterlind’s DVDs IMO should have been sold at a much higher price. Nuff said and I will step down from my soapbox. LOL Best Ray Noble |

In my experience, audiences and employers don't compare effects and set lists; they compare ability and personality.
Some viewers believed that David Blaine's no-nonsense handling of the Invisible Deck was real honest-to-goodness magic. Think about that and ignore what your peers say about it.

This is true. A performer sells themselves not their work.

Agreed, and that argument negates your earlier point. You could carry your original decision not to use Osterlind's material back to Annemann, Corinda, Tarbell ad infinitum...

I think you'll find that, on this set especially, the subtext is very powerful. What is there to be learned may have little to do with the effects.

Lance Burton was on a CBS late, late talk show last night. (I recorded it, because I'm too old to stay up that late.) When asked if he used the word "trick," Lance replied it was only the fancy magicians who used euphemisms for "trick."

When I purchase a set like this, if I get one effect that I can add to my repertoire...I feel very good about the purchase...because as stated there is so much more here of performance value...below the radar. Same goes for many books.
Personally, I always try to take the bare bones of an effect and tweak and change the method and journey to the climax enough so that fit's me, and 'may' even be unrecognizable by someone who performs the same effect. Ray, I know where you are coming from, and being as pure and original as possible is a worthy goal...but I think that most of the performer's who perform on a regular basis...probably do something similar to what I have mentioned above. My bet is that anyone who 'cookie cuts' material...probably doesn't perform that much in the real world. So in my mind, the issue is moot. Best. Rich |

Ray,
I've got to side with the above comments. You can only gain by watching other top performers "do their thing". You don't have to use the material, but there is much more to gain than just routines from watching a worker work. I consider the material secondary to learning from the live performances and Mr. Osterlind's feedback and approach to mentalism. I'm sure you agree Take care, Jerome.

Richard Osterlind - No Camera Tricks
This DVD set is just another group of great routines taught by a man who can both perform them expertly and teach them with all their nuances. It’s a lot of good stuff taught by a good teacher for an affordable price. What more could you ask for? Zodiac Revolution - I find the general method here a bit obvious for my tastes. However, the idea of working with six participants at once greatly obscures that. The subtleties help further obfuscate. The set up is worth it. The revelation brings a strong audience reaction. Swami Birthday - A great follow up to any effect involving star signs. Steno ESP - This one has a neat idea to use a great old principle without a force. Liquid Metal - I’m not too much into spoon bending - mostly because it’s very difficult for me to do without being obvious. But I know pretty much every way there is to do it and new ideas are always welcome. There are some good new ones here. Digital Feedback Extraordinaire - This one was great to learn. I’m a bit miffed to find out that I have two calculators that could have been used for this effect. I just recently purchased one because it fit my needs to gimmick it. Then I received No Camera Tricks only to learn my original calculator could do even better without gimmicking. I’m very thankful however to learn my calculator gimmicking days are over. Pagasus Page - The first time I watched this, I thought it was great. The second time I watched it, I figured it out. I would never have figured it out if I didn’t already know a thing or two about trickery. It’s a great effect. Richardwave - Brainwave Richard-style. And I admit the kicker really does add to it. I was aware of both principles being used and it still went right by me. It’s a simple yet powerful effect. Rubik’s Cube - This was amazing to watch. The performance kind of goes on for too long but I found myself in genuine suspense and rooting for Richard. For a moment, I actually thought he might not pull it off. Unfortunately, this effect will be very difficult to pull off. It was worth it just to see the performance - and I do think this type of thing is consistent with what people expect mentalists to be able to do - but I don’t see myself doing it anytime soon, if ever. Clearly Mind Reading - This uses a really good idea. I’m always leery of the notion of having audience members write down personal information and then taking it up but this one has one very strong advantage - the envelopes are never opened. The Poker Deal - I’m not into Poker but I love Magicians and Mentalists alike and enjoy seeing this type of effect. When I learn something new, I don’t think of it as learning a new trick - I think of it as learning a new principle. And I always think about how I might apply it to my own sensibilities. This is similar to - but not superior to - the Blackjack Demonstration on Richard’s Mind Mysteries Volume 2. Seafire Sequence - This is a great book test that deviates from the usual. It has a lot of books to choose from and some great number forces. The spectator’s word choice is much less suspicious than typical book tests. I also love the mail package ending. Dracula/ Errata Booktest - The Dracula book test is pretty good. I’m not too much into some of these “first word on a page” book tests. I find them a bit too obvious. I haven’t seen a book test yet - other than possibly Seafire Sequence - that I find superior to Corinda’s Impromptu Book Test in terms of simplicity and apparent randomness. So Dracula just gets an okay from me. The Errata portion - which is Richard’s own as I understand it and simply added as a bonus to the Dracula book test - is very interesting information. Whether I’ll use it or not remains to be seen but it’s very good information. 20 Card Test - This is astonishing. According to Richard, it’s an old trick that he learned from Jinx. Well, it’s an oldie but goodie. I find much of the old material superior to the new but this one literally blows many newer effects clean out of the water. It simply looks amazing. The Original TCB Routine - This is a routine that can be played seriously or humorously to the same effect. It uses the transparent bag Richard introduced in his Easy To Master Mental Miracles with The Phantom Artist effect and here in this series with the Seafire Sequence effect. It’s a very useful device and when handled properly appears innocent and attracts no attention. Voodoo - I love this effect. It stretches beyond the realm of Mentalism and into Magic but it looks terrific. It would be great to go along with any portion of a show that involves any kind of spiritual element. I personally think it would make a terrific follow up to slate writing. There are several great principles at work here. The Acid Test - This is one I will almost certainly never do. However, I understand the importance of knowing how it’s done and I appreciate Richard’s reasons for including this effect in this series. I work in television and Richard is absolutely right that large scale effects like building levitations are lost on television. I was absolutely appalled when a spectator decided to move the glasses around and was even more so - though not surprised - to learn that particular person was a magician. It’s very sad that magicians try to ruin each other’s shows. The Bonus DVD I received this as a result of purchasing directly through Richard’s website at http://www.osterlindmysteries.com. It features a performance without explanation of Richard’s hypnosis act. Personally, I find hypnosis a bit of a sham. People under hypnosis would generally do whatever asked while "hypnotized" even when not hypnotized. That being said, if the subjects are willing, it makes for a great show. Richard is about as good as I’ve seen. Personally, I would not make a good subject so it’s difficult for me to tell. I can only say the show was very well performed and very funny, especially thanks to some very good subjects. There are four other routines on the bonus disc which do have explanations to go with them: Double Down - Great principle at work here. I pulled this on my boyfriend and he demanded an explanation upon threat of wrestling me into a knot. I’m sorry to say I eventually surrendered the explanation. Flashy Read - This is a neat effect using flash paper. Make sure not to burn your spectator, though. Quadruplitear - This is great information to know. As I understand, this has been around a while but I was unaware of it. This is not a principle that I would use regularly, but definitely will try sometime. Incredible Mind Reading - The method behind this one is bound to be shrugged off by some with a “pfft” but I can’t wait to try it. In a strange way, it’s one of the greatest imp devices ever made. I’ll definitely feel silly purchasing it but I plan to purchase it nonetheless. Overall, this DVD set is certainly no disappointment. I do have to say that some effects are beyond my current skill level and I found more practical information in Richard’s earlier series’ Mind Mysteries and Easy To Master Mental Miracles. I have all of Richard’s DVDs. The effects he teaches and his teaching style particularly suit me. I also appreciate his knowledge and affinity for many of the older effects which laid the groundwork for modern Mentalism and share his feelings in that regard. Finally, I’ll say a few words regarding the purpose of these DVDs. Much has been said about the likes of David Blaine or Criss Angel - neither of whom are specifically mentioned by Richard - and their propensity to use camera tricks, editing effects, stooges, and confederates. A word about editing: I work in television and I can tell you with all certainty that avails are the most important aspect of any program. The need for commercials in conjunction with time slots means that programs must be edited to very precise time constraints. I can tell you that neither David Blaine nor Criss Angel - for all their skills - has the power to stop their programs from being edited. Refusal to accept editing would have ended their careers before they began. The most power they could have exerted would have been having any say over what might be edited - and I doubt there is a single magician who would elect under those circumstances to leave something in that made them look bad versus something that made them look miraculous. With that said, I also think that inserting things the audience didn’t actually see during the actual performance is completely unnecessary. I also feel that an army of stooges and confederates only turn your show from a magic act into Candid Camera. I have seen taped performances of Al Koran doing Magic Medallion on Ed Sullivan, Theodore Annemann bullet catching, and Chan Canasta impromptu mind reading, and I agree with Richard 100% that Mentalists - or Magicians - need not resort to camera tricks. If the performance is good enough for the live audience, it should be good enough for home viewers. I appreciate Richard’s stage presence. He looks great. He speaks assertively, clearly, and articulately - in stark contrast to someone such as, say, Criss Angel, who mumbles incoherently and looks like a rag bag. He poorly executes most of his routines - many of which would be great if presented properly - and looks like a Marilyn Manson impersonator doing a bad David Blaine impression. For my money, Richard - as well as Koran, Annemann, Canasta, etc. - makes the ratty mumbling modern magicians look foolish. The only problem I had with these DVDs was the sound - not the quality or clarity but the volume. The music between segments was excruciatingly loud in comparison to everything else. That, however, is the worst thing I can say about these DVDs.
The devil can advocate for himself.
