I've volunteered to do a 20-25min gig on Wednesday 8th May. It will be close-up, and I've contacted the organiser to have a table with a black table cloth, and chairs. The room already has lounges, so I requested to have those nearer to the table for the show.
I'm planning to do these items My spongeballs routine http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......17&1 4 Coins Across + Hanging Coins (David Roth) Two Card Transpo + Ambitious Card + Card to Pocket (various influences) Flight of the Paper Balls (Slydini) Colour Stunner (Paul Harris) OR Colour Changing Deck (Vernon) What do you think of this set? Any other suggestions and ideas welcome! If you are wondering, I don't have a cups and balls set. |

Are you limited to 20-25 minutes? I think all of that might take longer then you think it will.
I find that live performances take longer than rehearsals....at least for me.

I agree with Wes, look at the routines you plan to do and put them in an order that if you are running out of time you can drop one or two and cut to your final routine without having to rush.

I would always leave ACR in the routine. It is very very magical for layperson.

I don't think theres anyway you can fill 20 minutes with those 4 routines. A sponge ball routine usually takes a few minutes at most. Don't know about paper balls, but Red Hot Mama should only be a couple of minutes too. Impromptu OOTW I'm guessing that can be milked for about 5 minutes.
In my experience real life performaces have been faster than reheasals or about the same. |

Ah, decisions, decisions...what to take out, what to put in...there are a few things I am CERTAIN about
- I'm definitely putting spongeballs in as my opener - I don't feel I'm ready to perform coin magic, apart from the odd coin trick quickie e.g. coin in pen cap. Apart from the odd coin trick (and my spongeballs routine), I am only confident in performing card tricks. - I want a decent closing effect (e.g. OOTW or Colour Changing Deck) - 20-25 mins, no more. |

Do what you've got polished and what you enjoy. Pack as much stuff as you can, just in case... and a spare deck/ sharpie... you never know!
In walk around audience interaction tricks are great to open with, but I'd save them for after you've shown them that you're good in a more formal "they sit and watch" situation. Open with something flashy, short and snappy. Easy is good to, because you may be a little nervous at first. Also when you're opening a show you're checking out your audience, that diverts half of your attention. Remember, it's not what you do, it's how you do it. Have fun, and lead them to having fun too, and even if you've screwed up every trick, they'll have at least enjoyed themselves. Incidently I always find that being able to laugh at yourself can get you out of many a sticky situation (not the trick... the actual situation hehe). Paul |

Paul, thank you for your kind words. However, although I would really like to pack as much as I can, I don't think I will be able to do much in 20-25 mins. Ideally, I would like to have a bit of an intro and show them something before the formal 'show' starts, but the context built around the gig prevents me from doing just that. There is a musician (I think) performing before me (from 1 - 1:25) and it would be rude to interrupt his/her performance with lines like "Look look watch watch look look look watch watch..." or "Here, pick a card, any card..." So, unfortunate as it may be, I'm gonna have to adapt.
But the idea of JUST DOING tricks where I mingle with the audience in a kind of a cocktail setting sounds very lucrative. But, problems will arise, like performing angles and the weaknesses of repeating the same trick to a different audience in the immediate vincity. |

I'm a bit confused;
aren't you doing a spot at an open mic. night ? You can't wander around doing table hopping. Nor, if you are working on a table, perform tricks like OOTW because the audience can't see the table top. There are card tricks that will work, cards across or cards to pocket, but that would mean learning new stuff. Surely the tricks have to be stand-up tricks. Twenty minutes is a long time and I think you would be better falling short but doing four or five powerful pieces. |

But, the open mic is not at night, but in the afternoon at 1pm...don't know why. the tricks don't have to be standing up. I will use the table when I need it. However, I will be standing up anyway so I won't be able to do any lapping. Cards across and cards to pocket sounds interesting...I wouldn't mind learning any new tricks to add to my repitoire. But, realistically, I probably won't perform them at this upcoming gig. Just a general message to give generous thanks to those who have replied . You all had given me some good advice. |

Are you on stage, because if you are almost anything that needs a table will not work.

No, it's not on stage. I strictly do close-up magic. I will have a table provided for me.

Do the effects you are comfortable with. Allow about 4-5 minutes for each effect. 5 effects will be right for your act here. Try to find some links between effects even if it is only your words. If you move to cards stay with them.

I think 5 minutes for a sponge ball routine is too long.
Same thing with Chicago Opener. |

Okay, I've decided to reduce it down to this:
- Spongeball Routine - Chicago Opener - Spectator Cuts to the Aces - Henry Christ's Fabulous 4 Aces - Ambitious Card with Card to Pocket Finish (as Close No. 1) If time persists, then Slydini's Flying Paper Balls (replaces Closer No. 1) |

Robert, you said 5 minutes is too long for a sponge routine, but many of these routines can be drawn out by comedy, stories, and bits of presentation business. They will be non the less entertaining. It depneds a lot on the style of how MDew is going to put it over.

In that case you can say you can do a 10 minute sponge ball routine, but I guess it depends if your a comedian or a magician.

I don't really think I can drag a spongeball routine for 10mins.
Any references to any one who does 10 minute spongeball routines? |
