Well, it does to my director. (NOT LIKE THAT!)
So here's the story... I'm in a production of Barnum, and the director wants me to do a color changing silk trick during The Colors of My Life. He wants me to use scarves that are about arm's length. (And he wants me to have a gray one in there. Do they even make gray ones?) I currently do a regular type of color changing silks. You know, the regular size ones. I use the Tenyo Co., Ltd. ones now. Anyways, he wants me to use BIGGER scarves, for the sake of being able to be seen. He knows they can be seen, but I think it's because I won't be the only one on stage. So...yes, my point: Can you still do a regular color changing silk trick with large silks? They DO make them, right? I'm still a bit new, to put it lightly. So I'm not up to some bird to scarf to woman to waffle iron trick. (But that'd be cool, right?!?!) So yes...

With some sort of tube, yes is possible, but I never saw a gray silk in my life.

In answer to some of your questions:
Can you still do a regular color changing silk trick with large silks? --- Absolutely! Professional size is 18". And 24" is available but too large for the arm span of most people. (Remember that the silks are held diagonally but measured by the hemmed straight edge.) The 18" is available in single color change and double color change (2 colors change to 2 more colors). The pro models usually have a ring over 1" in diameter and are made from 100% pure silk that you can match with regular silk squares and streamers for other tricks. A well-connected retailer can get about any colors you want including printed silks. (Pro sets in 18" double color changing silks, also called "Double 4-Color Change" silks should retail for $40-50 US. Printed silks are considerably more.) Many of the cheaper sets do not use 100% real China silk. That can limit your options in routining and moving from prop to prop in the show. Your director may be better informed than you are ready to admit. You have a lot of options available to you. It's your show! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hi boynextdoor:
Abbott's Magic in Colon, Michigan used to make a 24 inch and 36 inch color changing silk (scarf) trick, similar to the Tenyo version. I believe their site is http://www.abbottmagic.com Ron |

Wow, that was quick! Thank you all for answering me!
Photius- That tube would have to be rather bulky, though. I know, right? Grey sounds kind of like the opposite of what people would want! Mr. Sanders- Those sound like truly enormous silks!!! I have a hard enough time with the teeny ones!!! Double color?!?! Sounds tough! 40-50 dollars EACH?!?! ARE YOU PULLING MY LEG?!?! AH! THAT'S A SCARY PRICE!!! OH MY GOSH!!! What do you mean, "...Routining and moving from prop to prop in the show?" You're probably right. Mr. Reid- HI! *Waves excitedly* Thanks; I'm totally looking into that!!!

I actually have (or used to have) a gray silk, so I know they are avilable.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Using a white silk over the blue or black silk on the "bag" side of the four color change will look grey or silver.
You can test arm span for using the double color changing silks by tying two 18" silks together at a corner. Then hold the opposite two corners and check your reach. It should not give an adult a problem. Many color change silks are made as children's toys and are therefore made in about the 10 inch size and from synthetics. They are not "ducks and ducks". To make a pro four color change silk set takes three 18" silks, a 12" silk and a 36" silk altered to look like one 18" silk with no seam on the bottom edge. (That takes equipment that can make permanent creases in silk without sewing. It is like the crease down the legs of better men's suit pants.) Add up just the cost of the silk and $40 is a deal. "Routining and moving from prop to prop" relates to mixing or replacing silks as you move through the routine without the audience seeing a noticable change in color, texture, size or drape of the cloth as you transition. Stage lights will often tell when bad changes are made. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I have made gray silks, even gray silk devils hanks. I have also made self contained color changing scarfs in larger sizes than 18" But to do all the color changes, you are talking about, you are going to have to switch in and out differrent sets of scarves.
$40 is a deal. As is often the case with theatrical productions, the directors have no concept of the cost of this stuff or how to work it into a story. That is why magicians are hired as technical consultants. Richard
