I've always been a fan of Ace Assemblies, or any of the sort.
But I've always had a problem coming up with close to decent patter. I have been using a "Follow the Leader" Theme, saying that the cards used (Normally Aces) go back to their childhood by playing such a game. But that doesn't really seem to work out. In case you were wondering, the Assemblies I perform are: Masquerade [Bannon] (I don't really like the suggested Patter here) Jazz Aces [Kane] Any suggestions? Thanks. -cody-

I know what you mean.
Take Jazz Aces. What exactly is happening there? Even if you're doing a descriptive patter (now I do this, now I do that...) what is happening? 1. You lay down 4 aces 2. You put an indifferent card on one ace, and pick up anothr ace. 3. This new ace is added to the indifferent cards and made to turn into an indifferent card. 4. The card you put on the ace is now an ace too. Phew! Don't get me wrong - it's a great trick and I'd love to know how to present it but it's got me foxed. |

Mods - shouldn't this be in the Workers?

I don't tell a story with ace assemblies.
I simply guide them through it and make some magical gestures. One idea might be to use some picture cards and build personalities and a tale around those. |

The Erdnase patter: "Ladies and gentlemen, I shall endeavour to illustrate, with the aid of this ordinary deck of cards, how futile are the efforts of plebeians to break into that select circle of society known as the Beau-monde and especially how such entree is prevented by the polite but frigid exclusiveness of its gentler members...." I think I might need to adapt it a little to suit my style...! That said, it's a cute presentation, but not suitable for Jazz Aces, IMO. |

How about no patter?
Try doing it completely silent and see if you can use facial expressions and gestures and body language to communicate what you want to communicate. Music is great but isn't always practical, a completely silent routine could be very powerful. I've never studied mime, but I suspect the number 1 requirement is knowing what you want to say. Once you know that then you can figure out how to say it. Forcing yourself to not use words could be an interesting exercise. Even if you do decide to use words, the exercise of distilling the message to the point that you don't have to speak could help you when you try to settle on some words. -Rd |

I use an Ace assembly which is classical but slightly modified by a German magician.
He uses 12 Jokers instead of indifferent cards. So the story is about being the Jokers ANY card possible. At the end the table is full of the 4 Aces and the 12 Jokers - nice layout.
