It's by S. J. Lea, who brought out the image-grabber notepad. I have 3 of his products now and they're all good. The Totem Tear ebook is nicely written and all the effects or 'applications' are well thought out. The book is more than just 'a billet technique', the effects themselves are worth the price. The basic idea of the tear is that the whole billet is used and a spec ends up cutting it to pieces. Without giving too much away in some of the effects (i'm not sure of the difference between an 'effect' and an 'application' ) the billet is a sketch that specs add details too, others involve computer printouts, one has 3 specs draw a panel cartoon, like you get in newspapers, on the billet and the magician/mentalist can recreate it on a large pad on stage and others involve lists. Getting the hang of the tear is easy, maybe I've always been doing tears wrong, but after reading the chapter on the totem tear itself I found that performing the moves pretty mucb work automatically. If you want a billet technique that gets you a lot of information from more than one spectator that easy to perform, the totem tear will do the job. |

The principle is similar to "the jagged edge" by docc Hilford. The difference is the part of the billet and that you´ll get 10 effects with "totem tear".
The basic idea is nearly the same. If you don´t know the "jagged edge" it´s worth the money.

Is it "instant read"?

Depending on the application, some billets contain more information that others. It takes as long to get the information using the Totem Tear as it does when you use any other tear. However, most of the applications are used in larger effects, so there is plenty of time to get the information.
In Shazamazon you hand the spectator a piece of paper with the covers of upto 15 books printed on one side, using the whole sheet. They choose a book, by circling it, and then the paper is destroyed. Whilst the spectator rips or cuts the paper into tiny bits, you have time to read with the tear. In this case a quick glance will give you all the information you need. In Cartorn you need to recreate a whole panel cartoon, including whatever the characters are saying. Obviously it will take time to read all the information needed. You use the spec destroying the billet and the fact that you need to get you pen and board ready to draw the cartoon to get all the info. |

Thank you very much. That's good to hear.
It means that you worked “reads” into all those presentations. Add the numerous presentations themselves, and it sounds like a book that could be very valuable to me. I’m working on some material right now, but will most likely pick up Totem Tear at some point in the future. Thanks again, Elliott |

There's also a bonus section in the back that includes his billet-reading notepad. Which is basically a way of gimmicking a notepad that makes reading the tears easy. He does make the point that due to the nature of the effects in the book - you don't need to use it! but it's a clever and useful idea - especially if you are working one-on-one. All you need to do is take the notepad out your pocket and start jotting down your thoughts as you read the spec's mind. Whenever you want to see the tear, you can just take a peek.

If you want more information that you can fit in the middle of a piece of paper and 10 original effects, then yes it is 'better' than the centre tear. Is it better than a billet switch, or a peek, or an impression board or pad, or wallet? Again it depends on your needs. I use a variety of methods and I'm always happy to read about more. |

Hi
The spec writes down a message of 4-6 words on a billet Will I be able to read it using this tear? TJ |

Yes, you should do. There are 36 words used in the Cartorn example. You can also have lists.

So do you think that totem is a lot better of a method that would take into acct spectators that don't listen to you when you have them write in the center of the billet? that way you could see everything pretty much no matter where they've written?
