Hey all. After reading some recent threads, I was wondering. How do YOU approach a table when your about to perform? Mainly cold calling them. Do you have cards in your hands (or other props), or do you perfer the clean look? If either way, why? Why is it important to you to approach a table with/without props?
Myself, I perfer to approach a table with nothing in my hands. Not even cards. It seems that if you approach them with cards in hand before you ask them, they are already making assumptions that may or may not be good for you. Flash backs of Uncle Harry performing at Thanksgiving come to mind, I'm sure! . So...let the discussion begin! Best, Steve |

Usually, I do cold call the tables, but I just made up a lobby sign for myself. As for approaching a table, I usually have my close-up pad over my arm. True, a lot of people do make assumptions about a deck of cards, but a month or so ago (maybe two), when the food arrived at the table I said that I would let them enjoy their meal. The gentleman at the table pushed his plate aside and said, "No! Card tricks are awesome, do more!!!" Ah, if only every table were so benevolent...

You might want to try the search function. This topic has been discussed before. Bring the old topic back to the top if there is something new to be added rather than open a new thread.

Blah, lets keep this one going...
Try this... "Hi there, welcome to (insert venue here), my name is Troy and I'm the resident maigician. Would you like to see some magic?" My actual patter is "Hi there, my name is Troy. Did you know you came in on Family Night? Well, I am the Family Night maigician. Would you like to see some magic? Great..." 1 in 200 say "no thanks." Posted: May 2, 2007 5:09pm BTW, I'm pretty sure every topic in the world has been discussed by now. I suppose we could all just search through the archives and find answers to questions. Or we could create a living, breathing, community of magicians. Isn't that the point of the Café? If we're using up too much bandwidth, let us know. |

Sarcasm noted! It's not about bandwidth; it is about answering a question completely and trying to help a fellow magician get the answer he/she is looking for.
Frankly, I believe that there is much to be gained by reading the previous answers and figuring out what hasn't been said and/or adding ones own particular twist. I doubt if every question in magic has been asked or discussed here on the Café'. I notice that trends, opinions, and ideas change over time. It would be interesting (to me at least) to bring the old topic back to the top and see if anything changed. I also notice that sometimes the question has been asked two or three times and posters from the first thread don’t bother to answer yet one more time. Thus their input gets overlooked. Sometimes there is gold in those past threads. It is always interesting (to me) to get as much information as possible on a question I'm asking. Pointing out the search function may actually help someone who might be unaware of it. Heck, I was here a year before I noticed it! Now I use it regularly to research those topics that are really important to me. I also believe that pointing out pervious discussions is much more helpful than “Blah”. But that is just me. I tend to like completeness, roots, history, and things that go bump in the night.

Actually. I have my approach. This was started to see how many magicians approach with something 'flashy' in their hands. Maybe doing some card manipulations, color changes, silks, d-lites, stuff like that.
Also, do you cold-call the table or do you use table tents? Best, Steve P.S. Danny, could you still send that email to me? simmonsmagic@gmail.com Thanks! |

Ive searched for similar stuff and it was a great help. However this as a new search has brought up a few thing new as well.
Through my research I find the “Hi I am a magician here / would you like to see a trick” type thing work. Also walk up empty handed don’t force it, as you get a prop or pack of cards out just ask them have they had a good day ( don’t become a canceller mind you) just warm to them. I kind of feel ive just repeated every one else but I hope it helps.

I currently cold call tables but what works for me , as I perform mostly for family tables, is to approach the table with multi-colored glow bracelets and ask the children or adults to pick their favorite color , as soon as the last one is picked I make a joke saying "ooh I am so sorry , Who ever picks <color> is paying for dinner. " I always say it to the kid , it gets a chuckle and 99 times out of 100 the father says " Did you bring money?" and follow it up with the requisite "they do have lots of dishes in the back to be washed" . It opens the table right up for fun . then I go into my act .

I have to say I hate the approaches that are dishonest. "Did you drop this?" "Is this yours?".
People are being intruded upon without concent. I find this very annoying when I am having dinner. I will never do this to people. If you can not manage to stimulate interest in what it is you are doing without some sort of "con", then don't do magic for them.

I agree Danny. I'm always straight forward with them. But, before I ask them about the magic, I manage to make small talk with them. I ask them about their evening, how everythings been going, etc. Then I ask them.
That very rarely gets me a no. Best, Steve |

paymerich- Nice work
I have tried some creative approaches before and I will build one up from there. Just to throw something else on the table is do something eye catching for example vanish a silk people catch it in there eye and ask you to do it again show hands empty make it re appear. With the past example ive had some success still working on that approach any ideas how to develop it wellcome. One thing works well with kids and people on there own waiting for some one is, I take a ping pong ball out put it in my mouth and shoot it out catch it in mouth. People look at you a bit odd but it breaks the ice. Like ive said before I have done some research and it seem to be pretty similar to what has been said however a bit of creativity and your find something to suite you and I feel that’s what paymerich has achived.

I just say something complimentary about the establishment I am in and then make a comment about how they want it to be fun as well, so they sent me over to show you some magic! If I am not getting any kind of positive reaction yet, I quickly add something simple and goofy (but with a big old smile) like... "it could be fun!" and I usually open with a simple yet perfect walkaround trick (in my opinion) referred to as bendover bills. I either already have them in my hand or by this time I have gotten them out and introduce the effect with a line that goes..."I have some change, let me know if you need any. Oh and by the way, notice how all of my bills are all face up and facing the same direction... They have to be wthat way, if they're not, I cant put them away until they are in the same orientation. But you know what? I found a secret magic way of getting them in this order blah blah blah... Then I just do the move where you turn every other one upside down then snap and wa-la they are all back to the original order.
Then I continue with something else or discover they don't want to see anything and move on. It works for me. GlenD P.S.- If you don't know this trick let me know in PM etc. will explain no problem

Hi,
Iam trying to get a contract with Pizza Hut for my first restaraunt gig (I am 17) I have been thinking and planning for this for ages now. My approach would probably not even mentioning RIGHT OFF that I was the magician but more of it appearing that I was a host or management checking how thigns were going and then I would do somthing that established me as a magician before I told them that I was. Also in regards to table tents If you print them up have something like a pridition printed on them out of sight. then you can use it in a trick for new customers Mark |

I tell the hostess to let the customers know that there is a magician strolling around and that if he doesn’t come up and you would like to see some magic let your waiter know and he will call him over for you.
This informs the costumers that there is a magician and that its not some random guy trying to sell you something. then I approach the table saying "Hello my name is _______ and I am the magicians here at (restaurant). The management has provided the entertainment tonight and I would love to show you some magic." It lets them know that they don't have to bay anything and that you are not seelling them anything |

Not an advocate of withcraft or anything and I know that people get a little careless on the internet...but has anyone ever heard of spell check or give your post a little quick review???
Oh well, it keeps the grammar hosts from having nothing to do I guess. Glen
