I am an old man now, but I do still love to perform children's magic...however, many times children' have caught sight of my pipe in my pocket and asked if it is indeed "magical". Seem my wife also thinks the visual of an old wizard doing pipe magic may be indeed fitting for my character as it were.
Can anyone recommend a book or DVD instruction to remedy the situation so the pipe is INDEED magical the next time I show it?
Best and Highest Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the café! You'll find some great magic information here as well as some good people.

There is an effect called "Pipe Production" where "a full-sized tobacco pipe is produced from a silk, vanished into thin air and then reproduced under the fairest of circumstances."

You can find this on the Jeff Sheridan, Genius At Work #4, DVD.

Hope this helps. Mark. Smile

Tom,
The Sheridan pipe sequence is very good, I know that dealers used to have multiplying pipes etc available, and you may think about using a real pipe as a "bubble pipe". The kids would love that and there is some great bubble magic available from Abbi Spinner, Dirk Losander and Vito Lupo amongst others. Good luck.

Don't overlook the smoke from the pipe serving as a "catalyst" for many things magical. Kalanag blew smoke from a cigar to make billiard balls appear and vanish.

In regards to the pipe doing something, don't limit your search to available tricks, but rather think in terms of effects. The pipe is merely the object. You can let it remain that as you subject it to a variety of different odd things, or you might consider letting it become a performing character. Given the physical attributes of a pipe, think of what pipes normally don't, or cannot do that might seem interesting. Once that is decided, let the method find the effect.

Up until I found this thread, I had not using a pipe as a prop/apparatus. The only magic I had hitherto derived from my pipe was from sitting on my porch smoking it during a nice heavy rain. Unfortunately that is a solitary experience that cannot be shared to the wonderment of others.

I rather like the suggestion for using one in lieu of a thimble. At last I have found a use for all those resin pipes I have turned my nose up at over the years (give me a good briar for smoking any day)

I believe there is a Multiplying Pipe routine in Bruce Elliot's "Classic Secrets of Magic," using some sort of chemical reaction to produce smoke from the pipes, which I believe were corncob pipes.

Perhaps you can adapt this to the pipes you have. SETH

Hello Tom,

Any man who smokes a pipe can't be all bad. I'd smoke mine in my sleep if someone would hold it.

I'm all eyes to see what comes out of this thread. I never thought to do a trick with one. I like Michael's idea of blowing smoke to produce a sponge ball, etc., but I suppose it wouldn't be politically correct these days.

Every man should believe in something...I believe I'll have another pipeful and see if I can come up with an idea!

I'm about to head off to the porch with my churchwarden to do just that myself. Give me a pipe or cigar and something to drink (wet or dry) and I get both relaxed and inspired...especially during a heavy rain.
