This DVD set is up there with the Doc Eason DVDs as being the best. Yes, Dowden is that good, inovative, and entertaining.

Hi Eyeryone,
Having just read this thread, I thought I'd give you the heads-up and let you know that we've just shot a brand new DVD project with Matthew, which is currently being edited. Shot in and around London, once again in front of real people, this DVD promises to be just as entertaining as Party Animal (which we also filmed and edited). Aimed at the beginner and professional, the project is titled "One Deck... 14 Tricks... 24 Hours" and I'll let you know more nearer to the release date. Best, Russ |

Hi Guys,
Just thought I would add to what Russ said. I know I said that it might be a while until I released another DVD as I wanted to wait until I had enough material for a new one, but I meant a Party Animal "2" so to speak. This is not actually a follow up to Party Animal, but rather a seperate project, which I am excited about as I think the concept is really interesting. I'll leave it for Russ to decide when to say more, but he works quickly so it won't be long. Thanks again for all your support and I'm flattered that some of you have already decided you will be getting it, that means a lot...cheers! |

What is the running time of the "Party Animal" DVDs?

I don't have the exact running time, but it's over 2 hours.
This is a really great DVD set -- one of the best of 2007. My faves are MST, his handling of Anniversary Waltz, Card to Any Number, X Marks the Spot, and The Time Machine. Matthew is a very funny and relaxed performer -- some of his lines made me laugh out loud. His thinking is very good on how he routines his effects. Almost every effect has strong misdirection built-in to get you through the dirty work. In many cases the dirty work is completed before the spectator sees any of the magic. Very nice position to be in. Also, something nobody else has yet mentioned, these DVDs are formatted in 16:9 widescreen format!!! Woo Hooo!! Those who have widescreen TVs (myself included) will really appreciate this! Looks great! Thanks, Kevin |

By the way -- Matthew -- which effect do you typically use as your opener?

Cheers Kevin,
I have a new opener that is a combination of a hot shot cut and something else which, if I do bring out a new DVD, I will put on that. However, if I'm approaching a group in a cocktail scenario I would say that MST is good as an opener and I use it A LOT! I generally like to begin with a card trick before going into anything else. I know some would say NOT to begin like that but for me, because everyone understands cards, it makes the introduction process easier I find. Thanks again for buying the DVD. Matthew |

OK -- I am sure everyone is wondering -- what does MST stand for? (or am I just missing out on some inside joke?) Another thing I like about MST is that you can give the card out as a souvenir and still end up with a complete deck with which to perform additional effects. Very cool. Kevin |

Hopefully Matt will give us the awnser. Tim

Nothing special I'm afraid...it stands for "Matthew's signature trick".
Hope you're not all disappointed. I guess it works on a couple of levels, as in when you say someone has a "signature" trick, and also the fact that the signature jumps. I think my brother came up with it actually. Kevin, that is one of the things that I like about doing that trick as well, because its a pain sometimes doing a trick where you end up losing cards all through the evening and end up with a thin deck. What I tend to do is carry round a load of duplicated in my pocket. When it comes to doing a trick such as ambitious card or card to pocket where I need them to sign it, I either just ask them to take one of my "spare cards", or even better, I will replace a fresh card in the deck with a duplicate and force that on them, putting the original one back after the routine. Is that what everyone else does? Matthew |

Matthew, I haven't seen your dvd yet, but I plan on getting it soon.
That is EXACTLY what I do when I do a signed card trick! I either hand them a spare and tell them so or force a dupe. When I give them a "spare card from another deck", I tell them, "the value doesn't matter, what matters is that you make it completely uniqe with your signature". Occasionally, if the night is wearing down and the deck is getting a bit worn, I'll just have them select cards from the deck to sign. Really looking forward to seeing your stuff!

Cameron, you took the words right out of my mouth. As you say, if the deck is getting to the point where I won't be using it for another gig, then I just go ahead and let them take anyone. But like you say, I always stress that it is making it unique with their signature that is the important thing.
Daren, Thanks for the compliment. I don't have plans to release a follow up for a while because I think you should make a DVD because you have something to share, rather than looking for material just so you can release one. I have gone into more detail on this on page 3 of this thread I think, but having said that I am part of a project that will be released soon. Its something I've done with Russ Stevens of RSVP magic. Russ wanted to take some completely self working card magic and see if I could learn them in 24 hours and come up with patter and presentation to make them entertaining. You can see a trailer at http://www.rsvpmagic.com Anyway, once again can I stress how much I appreciate everyone's support and nice comments. Keep the questions coming. Matthew |

Oh and P.S. Russ has temporarily spelt my name wrong on the site. He has put Dowdon in stead of Dowden. Just thought I would mention it.
