Hey guys, I've been into magic for many yrs n the bizzare has always been a facination. In fact, I constantly perform FREAK effects like needle from eye and thread from stomach(brahmo thread). I was jus curious, what makes a bizarrist and how do I dwell into this enchanted world. How did you guys start out?

Firstly 'FREAK' effects, as you put it are not bizarre magic (in and of themselves). This is a common misunderstanding it seems and a sore point with many bizarrists. The best thing to do is read through the posts on this part of the Café and you will soon begin to gain an understanding of what bizarre magick is and how to go about it. As an example check out this thread.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=14 It should help to clear up some confusion and perhaps create more! In short it is not an easy thing to define, as there are factors that some agree on as being essential and others that are somewhat disputed. I started out in normal magic, but was unsatisfied with the way it was often presented and the way much of the public views magicians. I began to study this genre in the normal way through books and learning from the many wise people in this forum. Hope this helps a little. |

For the type of effects you are referencing, you should check out SWAMI/MANTRA.

IMHO. being a Bizaarist is one who creates atmosphere, essence, assaults the senses to give the watcher a "real" experience. Presentation and storytelling is key I think. All of this is supported by whatever prop, effect, smell, taste, touch, or visual which will support the "reality" of the uncanny you are attempting to create. "Acting is believing" you must believe or give that essence to your watchers. Read some Antonin Artaud and his "Theater of Cruelty"[not literally] and find that "assualt of the senses" which is crucial... Just MHO

If you want to know what Bizarre is all about, your best bet is to delve into the published works of Bizarrists. The video "Eugene Berger Goes Bizarre," is an excellent summation. There is ORACLE Magic Magazine, as well as some very fine books put out by Leaping Lizards. Check out the website for the Inner Circle of Bizzare Magic; attend a Gathering. Collect back issues of The Invocation and New Invocation. Study the works of some of the original masters of Bizarre--Charles Cameron, Tony Andruzzi, or Brother Shadow. Or, like me, you can take your influences from the more modern practitioners like KOTAH (Ron Dayton), Ed Solomon, even R. Shane.
That said, I must admit that I, myself, am NOT a bizarrist in the truest sense; more like a Storyteller with Macabre Tendencies...But then, today, the line between Bizarrists and Storytellers is a VERY blurry one--such seems to have been the natural evolution of the genre... |

Being a good storyteller and actor is a definite plus for a bizarrist. As you dig into the genre, getting help from a theatrical director will improve your performances.
Read Christian Chelman's books and look at the pictures of his apparatus. The equipment looks real. (Much of it is real.) In all cases, it looks appropriate. It is not Tenyo plastic stuff. In bizarre magic, atmosphere is important and the equipment and your clothing sets the atmosphere.

Sometimes one has to be careful with one's clothing and equipment. I have a Victorian Albert (that's a pocket watch for the non-English) in the fob of my waistcoat (I think Americans call this a vest) but I'm ***ed if I'd let someone come near it with a PK device to stop it unless he bunged me a couple of hundred notes first.

To be a bazzarist you must be able to make magick feel real- use only quality props and costume, be a good actor & magician, understand as much as you can about the occult (because that is what your imitating)

Also, Kyle, bizarre magic usually (but not necessarily always) deals with some kind of supernatural phenomenon. Spirits, ghosts, astral projection, reincarnation are all the kinds of things you can use. Even things like time travel ae worth exploring.
