OK, Rings and Things II is well known for their quality metal work. Their line of cups, especially the Paul Fox cups and the Don Allen Chop cup line, has become legendary for beautiful, precision work. I have, and use, several of their metal items (Don Allen Stubby chop cup, brushed Aluminum Paul Fox and Stainless Steel Paul Fox cups, even a copper Benson Bowl).
Heck their Linking Rings sets are superior too (I‘ve the 12 and 10 inch sets)! But what they are less well known for is their wood props. Does anyone even know that they make wood items? I didn’t! Years ago I had a solid wood cup for Shigeo Takagi’s “One Cup Routine”, no not the hollow one that Jeff Busby put out, but the solid one that Shiego put out himself back in the day. I got it on a trip to Japan. Lucky the instructions were in drawings no Japanese! Sadly the cup was lost (borrowed, stolen, vanished magically?). Well I decided that I wanted to brush off the old routine and started looking for a solid cup. I checked out a solid cup that came with a set of wooden cups from India. It was unappealing, had some blemishes from the turning process, was varnished, and was some kind of lightweight and light colored wood. Worse yet it felt “wrong” in my hands. I just didn’t like it. Then while checking out the Rings and Things II site (R&TII New Releases) I noticed that they listed a beautiful Rosewood cup modeled after the Paul Fox cups. It looked great in the photo so I decided to buy it. I am not sorry that I did! It is a thing of beauty! It is turned to look similar to one of the metal cups. It even has a slight indentation on the top to keep balls from rolling off (the one from India had a flat top). Jake tells me that it is made from East Indies Rosewood and is a hefty (7.3 oz) making it an ease to handle. Let me tell you that it is ascetically pleasing (beautiful), and it feels “right” in my hand. It comes with a nice bag to protect it and the balls necessary to perform a routine (you can select your color of balls if you wish - I got gold with gold metallic thread). In all a nice set. You can check out my cup at: http://www.rnt2.com/product.aspx?productno=348 The Rings and Things II wood turning has proved to be every bit as beautiful and professionally turned out as is the metal line. I like the workmanship so much I ordered one of the Olive vase props and routine. http://www.rnt2.com/product.aspx?productno=295 I think that Rings and Things II will come to be known for its wood work every bit as much as for its metal work. I highly recommend Rings and Things II for their great line of props and especially to those of you looking for a quality turned wooden prop. Thanks Jake and Marcy for a job well done! Harry, I second everything you said about the quality of the woodworking that Jake at R&TII does. I had asked Jake to find a piece of scrap wood and turn a pedestal
for my 3" Ball Bearing for display. Recieve it yesterday and all I can say is WOW! I could actually put the pedestal up on the shelf by it's self and get more attention than the 3" Ball bering recieves! What an addition to my collection! Jake's now making a stand to display my 3" jumbo Silver plated coins. Can't wait to see it! |

Harry:
When you said a solid rosewood cup - you mean solid as in one piece of rosewood or do you mean like the solid glass cup used by Hollingsworth?

Even as we speak (write, post?) Jake is looking into making a chop cup for me out of purpleheart. All of the RNTII stuff looks beautiful.
Just my opinion. Tom

I just ordered a chopped cocobola Benson Bowl set and a SBL Curly Movingui wand with cocobola tips.
I can't wait to use these, they look amazing. I imagine this will be the first of many major purchases. I think next will be the Biro Ramsay cups and a solid cup as mentiones above. Cheers Jake! |
