I would like to construct a big old looking wizard's spell book. I would like this to be a really neat job.

The cover of the book is the most important part, with all those embossed ornaments and designs and I would like it complete with lock.

I am looking for some photos and pictures of such books to get an idea. Also I need some designs for the book. The cover should be iether dark brown or black.

Any help?

Thanks
Yours,

Ivan

I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for (leather covers), but here is a link for some nice ones constructed from wood:

They come on ebay periodically, but a handy individual could construct one themselves.

I like the cover of "Mystery School." Also, check out some horror movies and you can see some "old books made out of leather".

I'll try to get the pictures of mine up.

It was made by Michael Fraughton, and I believe there are only 3 of them. It is a hand made, antiqued grimoire. Michael did all the aging, hand stiched the pages, etc. The thing is gorgeous!!!

It is also a complete show with effects and "operations" set up throughout the tome. I think McBride has the other one, and Michael has his own. Anyhow, it has a hard cover with magickal glyphs and sigils that are inserts (also aged) that can be removed and placed about the room or table.

I'll get some pictures taken soon.

Best,
Jerome.

As one reads the book, you begin to find instructions for rites and rituals. There are also tests to give the spirits, magickal symbols in the grimoire to work with . . . that type of stuff Smile

Going through the grimoire runs as a full show from beginning to end. Many of the effects in the show (grimoire) can also stand alone; pk effects, pendulum tests, a tarot routine, spirit bell and others.

The book justifies many of the "odd" things we do in the dark, and frames it all around summoning an entity and then working with it (using the grimoire) in a series of tests and experiments.

I trust that answers your question.

Hi Niva,
If you don't have any book binding skills perhaps you should try this:

A couple of years ago I bought a copy of Black Hart's Big Black Book which is a wonderfully thick tome on bizarre magick. I decided that it deserved a place on my book shelf of antique books but realised that the plastic spiral bound look just wouldn't work next to the other older books.

I bought a large black cloth photo album, the sort that has the screw posts in the spine. I removed all the photo pages and trimmed and cut the pages of the Black Book to fit. I also then punched holes in the pages in line with the screw posts in the photo album cover.

Once the screws are tightened, they hold the pages so tightly that you cannot see that the book doesn't have traditional stiched/glued binding. I also decided that the cover of the book needing a "grimoire" type feel so I decoupaged a large pentacle (Greater Key of Solomon) onto a piece of thin wood that was painted black. I then cut this out (around the circle of the pentacle) and glued it onto the front cover.
I attached some copper edging to the cover and voila!

I have since also discovered the joys of resin molding which means I can now create books with some very ornate designs on the cover.

Here is a picture of three books I did:

Sorry its a bit small, if you PM me your email address I can send you some more photos.

No, not that I know of. Michael made these ones about 6 or 7 years ago.

The ornamentation can be replicated with a scroll saw and hammered iron paint from Krylon. wooden parts won't last as long as real cast iron but then again $100.00 buys you a brand new dremel scroll saw to make many tomes.

I don't need to bind the book. It is going to be a fake. But thanks for sharing scolman. Smile

Do you know if I can find a place online where to buy hinges and edgings for a grimoire?

Also, preferably of a light material.

If you are just making a fake book, you could buy a wooden book box. I have some made out of MDF wood. Cover them with cloth and they look very authentic.

Hinges and corners are available from Whitechapel. They have a massive selection of great stuff.
