I think all great card guys are great story tellers, the stories don't need to be great, but if you know how to tell it, its great help. Heres a couple of tips anyway.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Good stuff. And if you replace "storyteller" with "magician," that piece rings just as true. I never considered the connection before.
Not all magic is storytelling, of course. ///ark |

Magic is entertainment and entertainment in all its forms is storytelling seems to me.
When performing close up magic with cards, which is my thing, I use improvisation when telling the story. I don’t use set wording. I learn a story and tell it in my own words, as a result I never tell the storey the same way exactly. The more I tell the storey the better I know it and the better I tell it. I don’t like learning exact lines, because I am talking with people and interacting with them. I have tried leaning word for word patter but it dose not seem to work for me.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Indeady doo... all performance arts tell a story... how good it is depends on the performer...

Golden advise Tommy. Anyone who follows this advice I'm sure would see a great improvement in their magic. I know I'll be re-reading this advise more than once.
I had to smile when I read the following paragraph on going slow and not rushing. Can't tell you how many times I was scolded in high school acting class for rushing through my lines. Being nervous had a lot to do with. "As you tell your story, take your time, and give time to your listeners—time to “see” the story, time to laugh, time to feel, time to reflect, time to hang on the edge of their seats for what comes next. It’s easy to go too fast, hard to go too slow. If you’re losing their attention, you may need to slow down! After the story, be sure to leave time for the audience to appreciate you." |

I'm of the opinion that all communication exists for the sole purpose of telling a story. If we didn't have stories to tell, or information to share, we wouldn't need to communicate. How we share our thoughts, how complex or how intricate we make our designs, how successful we want to be, all have a single goal. To tell a story.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Stories....?....That's telling!
