I bought my first dove a couple months ago from pet store.

Because folks on here are no longer shipping because of stupid USPS.

When I got it, it looked very porky so I put it on Tony Clark's eating regime (3 Tbl).

Since than, it has really slimmed down a lot.

It's still very alert and active, but I want to be a good little owner.

So, my questions are this:

1) How do you know when a dove is too slim?
2) What should it's average weight be?
3) What are the symptoms of malnourishment?

Siding on the side of caution because of the dove weight loss.

Karol, a simple solution is this. Feed your dove at the same time every day. Measure the amount of seed you put in the cup and let him eat. When he's finished, remove the seed and measure it. Tomorrow, put in the amount of seed it ate. If it eats everything and is looking for more, add a little next time. Don't leave the seed in the cage all the time. It takes a little experimentation but soon you'll know exactly how much to feed it everyday. This will balance it's diet and keep it from overeating and will keep it nourished.

Ok, so you're suggesting I allow it to determine it's own diet again. But isn't that what got it to be a porky in the first place? Smile

Well, sort of. The problem is when the food is left in the cage for too long. As long as you take the seed out of the cage as soon as the bird is done eating all will be well, If you don't take the food out immediately the bird will just keep coming back for more, and more, and more, giving you a porky dove. Also, what type of seed are you feeding your dove? Certain seeds have a much higher fat content than others, and this can play a large part in how much your bird bulks up.

Dave is exactly right. You don't want to provide an all day buffet. They're just like people. If they don't have anything to do and they just sit around, they tend to snack. Let them eat what they want and then remove the seed. Daily excercise will keep them fit.

I buy a special seed from my pet shop. It's called dove mix. You can buy it loose or in bulk. I prefer the bulk since a 25# bag costs $20. I currently have 12 birds and the bag of seed lasts about 6 weeks.
