Scratch and grin? Haven't seen that one. Looks good though (I just found it). I always carry Holy Moly with me.

In addition to some of the effects previously mentioned, I often spontaneously perform the version of "The Pulse Trick" that was demonstrated on the Magic Makers' Royal Road to Card Magic DVD's.
This works particularly well in my office. The spectator memorizes a card as I riffle the cards in front of him/her. I catch a glimpse as I square the cards and then tell them that - b/c I'm a doctor - I'm going to "diagnose" what their card is. I remind them how doctors make diagnoses: I can stick them with a large needle and thread a catheter into their heart; I can place them in a claustrophobic tube like a CT or MRI scanner; I could put them up in stirrups...."Or, I could do it the old fashioned way by actually listening to my patients and touching them." I check their pulse and individualize how I ultimately reveal the selected card depending upon spectator's age, sex, etc.. This trick can easily be done in less than a minute with any borrowed deck, but it's more fun to stretch it out with the story that I create to come up with their card's identity.

Ringflight or with previously mentioned borrowed ring effects leading into this as conclusion.

I agree with Neil in the sense that should be something you would carry normally with you. So I’ll vote for a mentalist wallet and a few business cards that could be taken in flames out of a cardholder, and probably be used in a cool routine using an Emsley Count or something similar.
Best regards, Giovanni. |

If there is only a seconds notice, I usually do the Sylvester Pass with a couple of coins....a coin constantly appearing in the hand is nice and visual.

.....and I sometimes then vanish the coin using Brian Platt's "Catapult" move.

I refuse to use anything with an obvious prop. Especially when performing situational magic, it's retarded to give off the impression that you're prepared. So to answer your question, I like to study tricks that can be done with borrowed or standard objects, i.e. a coin or toothpick (if at a restaurant). I'll do human blockhead with a toothpick, or some coin productions/vanishes/sleights. I usually carry a supercoin (john kennedy) quarter on me for a multiple coin production ending with a firey vanish using a closed fist and a bic lighter.
Start clean. End clean. Never bring out a "prop". |

I had to add this. Gregory Wilson's new effect "pointless" kills. And because I am an accountant, what could be more natural than having a pen?

I recently had to do Copper / Silver with beer caps. More powerful than coins for me. I was shocked at the reaction it gets!

Some really interesting posts here - a wealth of good ideas.
For me, when performing impromptu, I prefer to keep clear of "propish" items. If I have a pen and a business card handy I ask for their lucky number and do a MAGIC SQUARE using the back of my business card - which of course I leave with them. Details of an easy square can be found in Harry Loraynes MAGIC BOOK. There are some other good things in that book using everyday items. Equivoque using five borrowed objects (coins) is another favourite; Phil Goldstein wrote a treatise on this - highly recommended. |

I've just remembered, when using the Equivoque effect, in the Phil Goldstein treatise he suggested concealing the prediction coin in your hand.
An alternative that I use, is to secretly write the prediction on a business card so that afterwards you can leave it with them. Just a thought !!? |

I ask a woman for a dime, tell her to hold it tight in her closed fist and that I will make it double in value. She opens her hand and - and - it's a penny!
I scratch my head. "I must have done something wrong. Sorry." And I don't have to do anything else. |
