I just received and watched newcomer Jeff Stone's DVD entitled The Close Up Magic of Jeff Stone and Friends. It's all cards and it's all right!! Nice usable effects that are fun and easy to do. Mr Stone's personality is bigger than his sizable frame. Check it out at: http://www.stonecoldmagic.com A fun approach to card magic.
Anyone else care to review this DVD? |

Hi Spinnato!
I also have Jeff Stone's new DVD. I've been meaning to write a review about it. I'm glad I found your post! The effects on this DVD, like you said, are all cards. And all of these tricks I could see myself performing for walk around, and for friends. All of it is very visual... the ace productions, and especially the shrinking card. It looks like trick photography! I need to go back and learn that one real good. There's a lot of effects on there too... and it seems to be easy material to learn. Thank you Jeff for a wonderful DVD, and I promise I will learn them good! -Jesse |

Jesse and Spinnato,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like you liked the effects. Have you tried any of the bonus stuff? Spectral Chill is one of my favorite things to do when I'm just playing cards with someone... It's seriously one of the freakiest things. |

This is a fun DVD to watch. No audience, just Jeff, but I like Jeff's sense of humor. He's like the guy you go to the bar and watch a ball game with and laugh all afternoon.
2 standouts for me so far are Jackson Hole ( I love card transpos and this is a great one ) and My Psychic Deck ( I really like "starnger" card effects like Chicago Opener, Ammar's Bluefield Debut and Jeff has a great version too! ) I watch DVD's like In read magazines ( I bounce around in no order ) and am enjoying Jeff's plots and moves. You can buy direct from Jeff at stonecoldmagic.com or your favorite dealer ( MJM has it ) mjmmagic.com He got me! I'm watching his effect "Sardeen Window" ( an invisible palm demo for your audience ) and I get what's hapepning. And then BAM....fooled me bad.

What do you all think of the color change in there?

I wanna know about the colour change too! It says in the description that the colour change is visual and new. I wonder how good it is.

I could answer your questions about the color change, but I might be a little biased. What would you like to know about it?

Title:Jeff Stones Cold Stone Magic
Medium: DVD Arena: Close up cards Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies I am only familiar with Jeff Stone because of his work on the Sankey DVD, Underground Jam I think it was. I enjoyed his work on the Sankey DVD and looked forward to seeing what he could do on his own. What Jeff gave us is a collection of 17 card routines with a little help from his friends. The production level is pretty standard. The camera work is fine and the sound solid through out and they did a decent job with the editing. I’ve seen worse production but with the cameras now available I’ve seen better as well but there is nothing wrong with what you find as far as the quality of this product. Now for the fun part, and that is trying to get my thoughts across without people jumping to conclusions. Jeff Stone, based on this DVD, is a slightly better than average card guy who is a bit more creative than most but he is far from being an elite card man. By this I mean that while I watched the DVD I knew when he was getting breaks, controlling cards, cutting from the middle, all that good stuff. A spectator who is not a magician likely would never notice these things of course so it is really no biggie. What is good about this is these are all tricks that are within the range of anyone with some experience with cards. I’ve seen DVDs with material that was extremely difficult and frustrating because it was elite material that a very few would attempt let alone perform. In this case Jeff brings effects that I think would be used by many of the magicians who would purchase it. If you are one of the elite card guys you may want to move on as the routines here likely are not going to challenge you. Jeff’s presentations are also as one expects from an experienced magician, like 80% of us are, yet again falls short of elite. I really think this is a good thing because it is wiser to market to 80% of magicians than just 20% of them…and those 20% don’t buy a lot of DVDs anyway. If anyone thinks what I just said is an insult to Jeff or the DVD they are mistaken. This is a DVD full of solid usable material presented by a good magician. That is far better than a DVD full of unusable material presented by an elite magician in my book. I rather enjoyed this DVD and I’ll be doing some of the material here and I think many will find work that would go well for table work, strolling, or other close up performing opportunities. As for you street assassins and hallway hit men you would want to do the effects without the presentation and just stare blankly at the spectator for that ‘street’ touch you love so much. Let’s look at a few of the items: Sardeen Windows: is a nice routine with color changes and all that good stuff. I like the way it is structured and think it would be excellent for the table magician. Little People: Nice little routine, creative and a bit different and includes props! Jeff, one thing, ease up with the use of the word ‘midget’, little people don’t like it. Tricycle Card: Another fun routine using special cards that would work well for table guys. Again with the midget? In this one regular cards turn into small cards. Target Card: Transpo, pretty standard but it involved that making a deck into a gun move that kids like. I personally like to carry these further and have a hole found in the card that was selected. Nice effect though. Keep Your Eye on the Joker: Nice flash production of four aces. You get the idea. Lots of color change moves, lots of ace productions, all are usable and pretty good to be honest with you. None of the effects I would call bad. No difficult slights at all and actually I think a good pass would improve a few of the routines but double under cutters will survive. Let’s look at the bonus effects: Jason Montoya’s Mistress Card Principle: Okay, not sure why this is here at all except to perhaps get his friends name out there. Basically this is the idea of basing a storyline on a ‘freely’ selected card. Tada. Spectral Chill: This is one of those unusual math based routines that I never understand, neither does Jeff, but with the right presentation can absolutely kill. I think this will be the first one people will perform because it is kind of odd. Triplets Interesting and visual method of producing three selected cards at one time. Pretty cool. Stone Cold Color Change: This is a nice color change, I’ve not seen it before and it is pretty creative. You use a fan to change the card. There you have it. If you are looking for card tricks you can and will perform that won’t require knuckle busting this is a good DVD to have. There is plenty of room for you to alter things to fit your style and pretty much everything is usable. Sure this material isn’t going to change the world but it is commercial, meaning you’ll go out and do these either while you are working a restaurant or just performing for your family and friends. Tip of the hat to the drawings used to introduce each effect, nicely done. Over all a well done project by Jeff Stone. Nice choices of material. |

In hind-site I would likely have cut this one out of the project. The original reason for including it was because at the end I gave some pointers on the riffle F**ce. That part actually got cut because of some audio problems and I basically sounded like I was rambling, so we just cut it. I should have just cut the whole thing... live and learn, right. Thanks again for the review. |

I love this dvd. and also his patter is hillarious!
when he says "jack ace" repeatedly. and in the target card routine, he says "tell the spectator to do incomplete faro.." so funny!

I got my hands on this DVD a while ago..
This is a must for any collection... plum simple it's got great ideas for a lot of card work. I'm looking forward to putting a cowboy twist of a few effects, and then doing some real world work with them. I let you all know how it turns out in the end... however, I am betting they are all winners! ~Diamond Jim
