Beautiful performance loved the cards but the bookttest was poetry in motion so fluid Michael was visibly stunned.

I remember reading in one of Derren Brown's books, either Pure Effect or Absolute Magic, that if he were to perform a book test routine, it would be Chan Canasta's book test.

Does it get any better than Canasta? Even when he gets it wrong he makes it right! And, is there anything more powerful than his classic force? Study and learn at the feet of the master. I'm so glad that there is some footage of him available.

It is a wonderful treat that this clip still exists - so much UK TV has been junked. Anyway, great to see the master in action - perhaps not firing on all cylinders but still head and shoulders of many calling themselves mentalists today! And what did he use? Cards, Books and oodles of charm.
Don't copy the effects, don't copy the style, just learn how important personality and conviction is. I believe I am right in saying that, with the exception of Uri Geller, Canasta is the only mentalist to have convinced the public that he was "real". |

I also liked the line, "It's not a trick, it's an ability", hahaha, very nice!

Brown convinced the public and half the magic community he was real. Especially in his first two series..

Canasta made the above-quoted comment specifically when asked about his ability to make people choose the cards that he wants them to choose. If you look at that statement very carefully, you can see that Canasta is being very honest. He did possess the ability to make people choose the cards that he wanted them to choose. I think that Canasta would see the use of a one-way forcing deck as a "trick", but the skill to force a card in a regular pack of cards as an "ability". - entity

Entity,
I agree. I did pay close attention to the context in which he made the statement. I loved seeing him work. -J.

No, I'm not missing the point - I didn't say that he claimed psychic powers did I? Just that the audience at home accepted him as real and not just a "magician" - he claimed to be a "remarkable man" and the audience accepted that.
Quite often he was doing exactly what he said he was doing - such as forcing a person to select a particular card. At other times he was doing nothing like what he claimed to be doing but audiences accepted him - he had believability which elevated him above mere tricksters. |

David: Sorry. I thought that when you lumped Canasta in the same statement with Uri Geller that your implication was that they both convinced the public that they were "real" psychics. I can see how I might have misconstrued your remarks.
I've found that Canasta seldom, if ever, lies outright. If he doesn't wish to make claims about a particular method, in order to avoid lying he simply doesn't comment on how he does it. He just does it. - entity

That was a lot of fun to watch. Great to see someone take a "simple" thing and make it into a great experience for everyone watching. I guess Chan Canasta didn't need the "grail" he could just wow people with a deck of cards. Great stuff.
