I wouldn't use black powder, that's for sure.
If you want flash and smoke...
Just use flash powder with a flash pot.
You will need flash cotton if you plan on using a DC powered flash pot though.
I know Hocus Pocus has all that you need.

Look in Fire Magic...
Electronic Flash Pot.
Flash Cotton.
Flash Powder.

Note a flash pot is about as big as two doughnuts stacked on top of each other.
Of course you can make your own with a can and a glo-plug, but it's not as safe.

Elmwood Magic sells plenty of flash acc.:

Randi is right about a flash pot. But it will be too big and noticeable to put on or in the box. The only place you would be able to store it is on the floor.

I use to have a certain flash pot that took green dot gun powder only. It required ac power. The fire went high and lasted long. I would not recommend gun powder for your effect for the following reasons: it would take to long to go out, too much smoke (depends), if 5-0 pulled you over in your ride, a lot of places would not require it on their premises these days.

There are plenty of ways you can make what fits you best from Elmwood. For example, flash glue a line of rolled up flash paper in front of the box or flash glue flash string/cord/rope around the front of your box. You can ignite it with something that shoots flash paper.

You might want to experiment with the Universal kit on page 5. I know flash powder (page 3) can be used with ac power, I do not know if it can be lit with the flint flasher on page 3. If so, have it inside a packet of flash paper or cotton and use the flint flasher to lite it on top of the box.

Good luck

Thanks Dynamike, I didn't read a word. (The lady in the nursing home did it for me!)

I never recommend a flash pot with an A/C power source. On the road there are too many local "surprises". Glo-plugs on 9 volt DC work (although not perfectly).

The worst surprise at any show is for the stage lights to go off, the fire alarm come on and the emergency exit lights start flashing! Recently, I got that honor while being the MC in the west. Fortunately the Fire Marshall happened to be in the audience. (If you plan to use a dove cannon in your act and I'm there, please warn me!)
