What would you say is the most "comprehensive" publication about mentalism written to date?

There you can find all the previous threads that asked this same question. And you can read the numerous responses, most of which will say "13 Steps to Mentalism" by Corinda

I am not sure if the same question as been asked before since "13 steps to mentalism" seems to be more of an introduction type of book then anything else...
"Mind,Myth&Magic" on the other hand seems to be regarded as the "bible" for contemporary mentalism from what I've managed to read on this forum. Are there any other books/magazines that are as comprehensive as Mind,Myth&Magick in scope as these are the types of publications I am looking for? Thanks in advance. |

Comprehensive? Depends on your "style"...
Color series by Maven. MM&M by Waters. The Jinx, by Annemann 13 Steps, Corinda Tarbell (since everything can have a "mental" spin put on it... Or a handful of television psychic shows, to show you how to act, and what to do, and what not to do... Lee |

I think TA WATERS books got enough Material to make a career as a performer...the rest is from Acting Classes

Office Depot or Staples. Ted would say Woolworths.

Bascom Jones' Magick.
Annemann's The Jinx. Sam Dalal's Swami and Mantra. ... Collections and reprints of old periodicals contain literally thousands of ideas, routines and presentations. You may wish to take the time to attempt to hunt some down and digest the material within.

All of the above - LOL.
One problem with this field is that it is material rich and principle poor. The L&D test is the basis for how many segments/tricks? There are only so many ways to peak a small piece of paper. An envelope is an envelope is an envelope. Presentation and style are the meat of what we do, IMHO. The differences between Max Maven and Richard Osterlind in presentation are very apparent at first glance -- but the material (moves) are the same -- with the difference being presentation. This is why I feel the complete run of the original "Magick" (with inserts) is so important. Every type of move, over the run, is presented in different styles by the users of the move from inside their persona. MM&M, too, is full of wonderful (even usable) stuff. Just way too much of it. I have a penchant for venue specific pieces like "Seance" where mental magic and magick effects cross. "The Hull Enclyclopedia" is a wonderful shotgun collection of material I would rather keep secret from the mass of magicians who would be mentalists for "part of the act." I find Larry Becker's material works better for them as it is replete with solid one off routines that stand alone. I have not found any works that offer a collection of "mechanicals" and plans for mentalism -- palmed roll paper devices, gypsy reflecting tables, Ostin clips, billet switch mechanisms, impression devices and the like. I also find the two books by Borodin essentail to my work -- but many feel are too bizarre and plotted for their style.

As above, although MM&M tends to cover a lot of stuff in a practical routine way so was more useful to me as a performer.

I've gotten a lot from this....mainly the part on working on my "presentational style" before trying to get my hands on some of the works mentioned above...thanks.

Would you say that a book on showmanship like "strong magic" by darwin ortiz is a good place start working on my "presentational style" so to speak?
(I know it's not intended for mentalists per se but I still can't help but wonder) |

No matter how good the books are, I don't believe for a second you can learn showmanship from a book. I suspect it's the magician mentality in us that makes us look for the 'inner secrets' of showmanship in some forgotten book... but this stuff is not a trick to be learned, or a theory to be dissected and rehearsed in front of a mirror.
There are many things you can do to improve... follow courses in improvisational comedy or theater, become involved in stage productions, work with a vocal coach, compete in theatresports, join ToastMasters, etc. But whatever you choose, I recommend you learn by doing not reading.

No hard feelings - it was meant as a nudge in the right direction not a slap in the face.
