Tie one end of the rope to the mic stand. Have a spectator (or assistant) hold the other end. Cut rope near mic stand. Have spectator walk to other side of stage. Say the cut was to the audience's left, but now it is to the right, So I will move it to your left. etc etc.

Easy for you to say Pete. If I (I'm not Nick by the way) tied it around my mic it would be around my head because I use wireless but this is a great idea which I will certainly use whenever I work with a mic stand!
Sorry to jump in on this with my nonsense but I just put a slice of baloney in each shoe and I'm feeling funny! (My apologies to Steve Martin for stealing that bit)! I'm still trying to work on this myself, so I'm all ears on this thread, or I should say all eyes. Whatever.

The rope could also be disguised as the wire to the microphone. Grandpa will just have to make sure his wireless mike is really concealed so everyone thinks he is using the mike on the stand. Now when you cut the rope, there is a loud bunch of static noise and the mike goes dead. When you tie the knot in the rope at the far end away from the mike, you try the microphone, and you get a tiny bit of sound from it. So you slide the knot closer to the mike and the sound gets louder. You untie the rope and the mike is dead again, so you tie it back in the middle, then slide the knot very close to the mike and the noise is better. Finally you make the knot disappear and the mike works normally again.

Spellbinder, you are a true original! I love your ideas and I've purchased a few of them (and I'm waiting anxiously for my Jim Gerrish Happy-Clappy-Slappy wizard Washer PDF to be released).
If this wasn't Pavel's thing, I could see you coming up with a workable plan for this neat idea. By the way, any late word from Jim Gerrish on the Washer thingy?

Tie it around your neck. What difference does it make what you tie the rope to. Your leg, a chair, but I think around my neck is what I will do next chance.

Jim got side-tracked with his Hardboard Dove Vanish Boxes and he's all into this "Parallel Universe" Illusion that he's working on, but I have made him promise to finish the HCS Wizard Washer this week. He just has the Bubble top and the inner gimmicks to go and then he's free to work on whatever he wants.

Here's a presentation. Not sure it's novel and interesting though:

Why not have two microphone stands on stage without mikes. Tell a story about being a kid and tin cup or paper cup telegraph sets and the disappointment at how poorly they worked. Say you were so disappointed you found a new way to use them. Pull the rope out with a cup or can on each end hang a cup on each mike stand with the rope stretched between and go into the routine using some a tonal pitch and light music in the background with therimon-like slide sounds (sliding electronic pitches like in old science fiction movies). Stop music each time you break the rope, start it when you tie it with static, slide pitch as you slide the knot, break sound at each separation. Eliminate static at the last knot when it is vanished into the rope. Climax music and take the applause. As you roll up the string telegraph ask the audience how they like the way you use your telegraph.
