I have been thinking about either buy or making something similar to the Tel’s Bells. Have the plans for something similar in a S. H. Sharpe book. In any case what I was wondering if anyone has used any of the market versions and which model to purchase if I don’t try and make my own. The most important thing for me is when I give the bell to a volunteer and they can’t make it ring, can they easily figure out how to make it ring? The Sharpe version has a little lever on the handle that anyone could quickly figure out to re-engage the clangor.
Thanks, David Tower

Get the original. In use, a volunteer will not figure it out. Plus, during the performance, they are nervous to begin with and won't have time to look for anything. The "method" will go right past them and is not noticeable.

I agree that a volunteer will not "figure out" Tel's Bells, but it still might ring if they shake it hard enough. Mine may have been a little defective as it seems not to work exactly right. I have to be really careful with it, and actually loosen the mechanism slightly. It works a little better this way, but still there is a chance the bell will ring (a single ring) if it is shaken hard enough.

I've been using my Tel's Bell for years and only once did I have a child
make it ring because they shook the bell with such force I was afraid of getting injuried. Robert. |

I agree that the first ones were much better.
I actually love Tel's bell so much, I have 5 of them. The newer ones become loose after a while and I really haven't gotten around to figure out how to tighten up the loose ones effectively and end up buying a few. They are great and really a great running gag both with children and adults.

What type of routines are you using with Tel's Bells?
Thanks! Dan. |

It was not the loosen up with use that caused the problem. It did not seem right from day one. In fact I make sure my handle is slightly loosened before showtime. It works a little better if it is not screwed down tight. This poses another problem though, because the handle can easily be loosened while the volunteer is holding it. I should have sent it back when I got it, but I kept thinking it might get better as it got broken in. Regan

My last Tell's Bell went because it was so tight my aging hands could not release the mechanism without being obvious.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now let me ask you one more thing. What if I reverse the procedure? In other words every time a volunteer uses it the bell rings but when I try to use it nothing happens. This is a bit more my style. Do you see any problems with this?

David,
I believe the spectator would need to know the secret to ringing the bell, so you would need to do pre-show prep and someone with strong hands. Ken |

David, I don't see a problem with letting it ring by the spectator and not for you. Just handle the "method" when you get it so it won't ring and undo it when you give it out so it will ring.
That is another way to get some great mileage from this effect and NOT make the spectator feel like an ... in the process. Mark. |

Mark,
There is no way to work mine like that. The 'method' is kind of automatic. As Ken said, the spectator would have to know the secret to make it ring.

I ring it to commence the kids show and let a few kids try it. The problem is that they grab it, loosen it, and break them. I've ordered a new one (great gag) and will have to find a way to let the kids try it, but not lose control...

I use the Tel's bells as a part of a routine that every thing goes wrong.
Two kids are invited one is holding the bell while I am talking to the other. Since he can’t work the bell I am giving it to the other kid while talking the first kid. The routine continues with braking wand, braking fan, hat that change to toilet pump and finish with mutilated parasol. This is a 5-7 minutes routine using two small kids with huge laughter and grate reaction.

I use the Tel's Bel with my Wiz-Kote and I tell them the bell on the Wiz Kote is broken so he has to count to ten then ring the bel so we all know the shoe has been cleaned, Santized and deorderized. (It works like the microwave)
Well you can guess the rest.

I use Tel's Bel in my Comedy Rope and Ring Routine. It's used not only for the no-ring gag but also for another purpose. It's in chapter 3 of my new book Kingdom of the Red which will be released on or before August 31, 07.
You can find out more about the book by clicking the link by my signature below. There is a photo from that chapter on page two of the website. Larry |
