Hello Everyone,
I am after a good story or theme about THIRST! I want to use the glass that has liquid in it and supposedly a flea drinks the liquid. The spectator can see the liquid go lower and lower as it sits on the table. Forgive me but I cannot think of the name of this effect. The story I want to tell DOES NOT involved a darn flea! LOL I was thinking that this might be a great bizarre effect with the right story! Anyone know of a story or where I can find one about thirst? A story that would spark ideas in my development of THIRST! Best Ray Noble |

Depends on what the glass looks like and how it would fit into the story a piture of the glass would be helpful... this almost seems like the ghost of someone who died of thirst... murdered or worse yet tortured... I'd have to see the glass though... could be a story of crossing the desert... illusion and mirage may play a part in the adventurers demise as he treks the sahara in seach of a relic... which he found and now his spirit will demonstrate... a glass of water is offered in remembrance to his perilous journey... from which he bought back oh I don't know lets say a mummified hand... this effect as a stand alone would have to have a pretty intruiging story to carry it by itself... I would be more inclined to mix it with a few things on the water theme...
research the effect dehydration has on the body it can cause serious hallucination and if that's not a reason to show other effects I dunno what is... the preciousness of water comes to mind when I think of waterworld or movies where people are set adrift at sea " water water everywhere but not a drop to drink..." the irony of it... sacred almost is the importance of water to our bodies like breath... 80% of our body is water... there is mention of water in many fairy tales, myths, one is in a story by poalo coelo and its about narcissus and a lake... can't remember which book off hand but it is a beautiful story if your interested I'll get you the info... maybe it can be a quest to find the fountain of youth... why not the other wkend I purchased from a garage sale a bottle which contains genuine water from the fountain of youth, st augustine florida... but maybe a quest through the jungles of the amazon, enduring crippling thirst, on a whimsical mission to find a mythical fountain... I believe it is kotah who has a routine in which a piece of parchment touched by the water of youth transforms a dead leaf back to life... correct me if I'm wrong... I like the irony in those idea's either being surrounded by water or on a quest to find it... and everyones felt thirsty on a hot summers day... you could even use suggestion to get their mouths going... I'll get back to you on this one I like the idea... give me a link to the glass so I can see what it would fit in with....

Tony, thanks for the link!
declanring, Yes,you are thinking like I am! This is going to be a really cool story! Here is what the glass looks like. http://www.udaysmagicworld.com/wizzap.html I wished that this were a real glass instead of being made of plastic. Maybe I will get lucky and find a glassmaker that will make a real glass with some character to it. Ray Noble |

The "glass" you showed doesn't work well with water. It needs milk or a milky opaque fluid to conceal the hydraulic action. You might want to consider a glass that works in combination with a hollow tray to do what you are looking for.
As for the story; for comedy - The Foo Bird. Seriously? The Foo Bird without the gags. As you struggle to get near the glass, the water gets lower and lower.

Now, this is a bit of brief history for you. It is simple, really, to get people to "confess" to things. One only has to put them into a state of mind where they WANT to confess. And how much more simple can it be than thus as I shall describe. One need take but a goblet of water, such as I have here. Surely the vict, er prostpective prisoner will be in a state of nervous anxiety, and in need of refreshment. A simple stip of linen, though I am without, if you will imagine it, only two feet long, this simple strip of roughly spun fabric. I have but to dip it into the water, see how it absorbs?...You long for a drop of this nectar of life, and so I will give some to you, here, why you can swallow the moisture along with the fabric and ease your thirst!
Wait, no, you cannot swallow it all, in fact, I shall allow you to absorb the moisture form the linen, just as your mind shall absorb the truth you shall admit to! Anyway I got carried away , sorry. It seems during the Inquisition, the partial swallowing of strips of linen, allowing things to dry just a bit, then pulling them free form the throat (what is a little blood among friends!) was a considered form of toture to obtain confessions form the heretics. An imaginary bit of linen, and miming the actions with the water level lowering in the glass. (I do mine without holding the goblet, just having it on the table.

Some of the additonal tales brought to mind for a lowering water level could involve some of the Japanese water demons. I cannot remember the name off hand, but they ahve a bowl shape in the top of their heads that they have to keep filled with water, perhaps a tale of how you know one of these is about your house, as it need to keep the water bowl full.
I have a "ghost cat" that might be found to drink water from a cup, like the live ones do when you are not looking!, though using a ghost dog will allow for some sound effects if you feel the need to call attention to it. One could look to science and bending the rules, by "speeding up time with this special box, notice how quickly the water evaporates from the glass... depends on where you sort of want to go with it all. k

It is not the number or size of the posts, it is how one uses them!
In my observations, when the need to correct or improve ones work presents, opening with the good parts first gets the person invested in what you might additionally have to say. Ray already said he was looking for ideas around the means of the glass, AND that he felt he might need to look to a specially made one so to avoid the plastic. Tales to go with the concept, ideas and thoguht seeds to help him get his mind flowing towards the goal........Now you are not interested in the flea thing, and as have never seen that one done or told, I cannot comment, other than if the liquid were blood, one might be able to compare the amount of blood ingested by a flea compared to say.....<pick your favorite blook sucking creature> the presentation will be biased n how you present it, funny or serious, either way it smacks a bit bizarre. If I recall a while back, there was discussion on the little invisible people of Africa (I know I will mangle the name, people put flour on the flooor and raise their beds out of reach for protection, and to tell if they have an infestation...... I guess it will depend on if you are invested in Water being the liquid, or if you are willing to have an alternative substance in use. k

I brought a pair of Tokoloshe back with me from Swaz. They each work for me now I named them Beatrice Omen and Switzerland Deville. Look for them wherever greater miracles are performed.

There is keeping it simple as well -> water is life -> as it vanishes so too does life run out... lots of analogies in the stories listed here as well as in film e.g. watch the Exorcist where the holy water is dripping out as Father Merrin dies
One could also do a storyteller bit about the Earth running out of natural resources if we are not careful...

How about you tell the story of a woman who commited suicide after her lover died by drinking poison so they could be reunited in the afterlife, blah blah... then as you contact her ghost the poison in the glass (next to a lighted candle perhaps)starts to be drunk by the womans spirit who is trapped in limbo and can't find her lover.....
