Thought I would share something with you from last night's show. We were contacted by a woman who said her son had invented a new illusion, and could we come by her house to see it? I generally don't do that type of thing, but she was really insistent so today we went over to her house.
She took us into the garage which had 5 chairs set up for us in front of a large red curtain. The lights went out and then some stage type lights came up to reveal a young man about 16 center stage, he was very nice and did a few coin and card tricks and I thought "Oh boy that's it?" He then announced that he would perform his newest illusion, he sat down on a small chair and a chain saw kinda floated down from the top of the stage, Ok I thought, a nice levatation, but so what. He pulled the starter cord on the saw while still sitting and proceeded to cut thru both of his legs!!!! One at a time they fell to the floor, blood gushing everywhere. I do illusions for a living, I've seen it all, but I could only think "This young fool has made a mistake and cut his legs off" He then placed the saw on the floor, and slowly stood up with a grin on his face. We were knocked out! Anyone ever seen this before? I'd like to buy it from him and modify it so there is not so much blood. It is a killer! Saydean |

Saydean,
Sounds like you may have just found a gem. Did he put his legs back on before he stood up, or how, what? Did that part look good too? Anyway, sounds like a killer. I've never heard of anything quite like it and from the looks of your show, it would fit right in. Sable

It sounds like 1 part Rudy Coby,
and 1 part David Copperifeld. I would like a better description of exactly what happened. Did he use a cloth to cover the legs? or did he just sit and then cut? how? were? they restored? Chad |

To answer your questions, Yes he covered his legs before the cut but the cloth only came to mid-way on his lower legs. When he stood up he held the cloth from knee level to floor and then dropped it.
I have received several E-mails from people who want the secret, I'm sorry, it's not mine to reveal, so don't ask. I hope you understand that. I will say this ....If you think real hard about it, and know a little about illusions the answer will be obvious. There is only One way to cut and restore somthing like an arm or leg Saydean |

Well now, I guess there are a few more ways but, magically speaking I only know one that comes to mind. Say your not a surgeon are you?

I think one would actually have to see this in person to make a proper judgement of the illusion whether knowing the secret or not... I usually find thats the easy part of illusions.

I think from Saydean's descriptions, I can tell what he did. The sitting and the partial draping the cloth fit my theory. Although it may not be the only way to do a limb illusion, it sounds like the "common" way.
But this is not the point. Who is this 16 year old doing such a clever trick? It seems like a totally new effect (forget about the method, many stage illusion methods get re-applied all the time). I'm really impressed with that kid. Did he invent it himself? My only concern is all the blood. I don't like gory magic. I think it limits its appeal. |

Yes, he invented it himself . His name is Scott Jay and does not perform magic. He works in haunted houses at Halloween. After working with this illusion for the last month I have decided to put it on the shelf for a while its frought with danger and you are right about the blood stuff, plus it stains everything and leaves a real mess .One additional hint about it is the chair is the gimmick .

Yes Saydean, I agree with Peter. You must see the illusion in person in order to judge it.Usually what looks nice to someone may not seem to be so for the other. Nevertheless, according to your description the young man had developed a gem apart from the blood part. A professional touch may create a miracle out of it.

As it's (hopefully) obvious that the chap didn't cut his own legs off, I guess it's safe to assume that the blood was feke. How about raising the issue of too much blood, and people fainting at the sight of blood etc, and then introducing a syringe (ala milk jug effect) with some nice luminous liquid in it - this would be a clotting agent - and "injecting" it into your arm before cutting off your legs. That way you could justify a little spurt of blood instead of the Victoria Falls.
Bear in mind that youngsters - especially males - find the blood thing all the more appealing! jm2cw John |

Dutch and I were talking about the effect and its marketability. Its really only good for Haunted houses or halloween shows.
Blood and guts (unless your penn and teller) really dont have a place in todays illusion show. Just a thought |

I think it was Richiardi, many years ago did the blood and guts bit on stage using the Buzz Saw Table. He let the audience up to view it.
I always wanted to do that illusion, but when I saw it done and the gore, I knew it was not for the American audience. I later found out the it went well in Mexico. Now the Copperfield Buzz Saw was done very well. If the act could be done in that fashion, it might be marketable. Again, Copperfield split himself in two without a chain saw! (Thanks for the name correction)

That was a Buzz Saw on Stage and a great way he presented it. People even passes out when it appeared it failed.
That's not the one I was talking about. It was where he appears split in half holding the lower half, He did this in the street, I think.

I thought you were talking about the stage version, sorry!
Actually that buzz saw was outstanding. It was not so much the method of cutting (i.e., buzz saw), but the final effect. His entire body appeared to be totally visible. Now it may be fairly clear how he did it if you have a background in illusion, but it was a huge step forward compared to the other sawing methods. |
