Hi all:
I absolutely love Max' routine "Divine Write" from his VideoMind series, but I'm having a real problem with getting the impression through the card box. I've followed Max's instruction to the tee, and even experimented with various types of c***** paper, including different types of pencil leads too, but I just cannot get the impression through. Has anyone come across this problem? Tips / guidance appreciated... |

You have to get the cardboard above the c***** paper very thin, it is its thickness that generally blocks the impression.

Thanks - I've tried doing that to the extent possible, but still doesn't work. Are you using a specific c***** paper / pencil that works for you? Pls. PM if need be...

Try scanning a card box and printing it out on paper, cut and glue. Would this work? Don't have the series, so I am thinking off the top of my head. How about a cheaper cardbox?

Are you using a blank card for imp******ns?
I would also make sure the deck is completely full (throw in a joker). A tight fit will help! I had never had any of these problems when I gave it a go. SW |

You could also cut out a window in the panel of the card box, and then cover it up by gluing a scanned image of the panel done on thin paper.

Even better, avoid the c****n paper altogether and try Christopher Taylor's approach in his book, Unconventional. This way, the spectator can write the card name on a Post-It note and then tear the note off. You will know what they wrote without even having to open the box.

I'll second the 'copy the card box idea.' I have an old magic slate version set up that way. Cut a hole and paste the image on the box.

Jay Sankey sells a thin plastic sheet that is a printed card box cover.
It works perfectly. I bought it for this routine. So sensitive you don't even need a golf pencil. James

I use one of those golf pencils, they are stuby and come with short thick leads that make for making good pressure.

I tried Annemann's version of the box
It only worked with paper for Handwriting, if you know what I mean Lunatik advised me about SAW and that's what I use now It's so easy TJ |

You could always use "Just Think" by Mark Mason.

P.S.: I've just ordered Private Property from magicproshop.com. It is included free as part of Sankey's "The Art of Sleight of Hand" DVD.

Ok you guys: you do not have to take the box apart!! There is an insanely simple method in my first book, Inside Out, called the "Thought Recorder Deck", in which you take about 2 minutes to turn a new deck of cards into an impression device. The deck is examinable before and after the the effect and it is very, very effective. It costs about $1.50 to do it. The method is also described in my upcoming Close-up Mentalism DVD, "Beyond the Conventional" from Nardi/Spelmann's Inner Mind Productions. Cheers (and stop ripping up those card boxes!).

Here's another thought: you can do the same effect without having to write anything down...it's Dan Tong's "Laws of Order" deck, with a twist. I added a Ted Lesley idea that Dan told me about and it works the same without writing a thing down. I've done this numerous times, it gets the jaws a dropping!

Chris Taylor's method is excellent and practical for this. Another method for those who are interested is to use one of the Crystal Vision cards (poker size) in the box on top of the deck then proceed the same way as max teaches in his routine. No need to alter the box at all and the impression will always be clear with this method! Alternatively, use an S.O.M notepad from Outlaw or another type of device and don't even introduce the deck until after the cards are thought of (and written down).

Taylor's method is the best. I use it for drawing dupes all the time, especially when transitioning from card work -- or doing mental work with cards -- to "remote viewing." Without explanation at the start of your card routine or "cartomancy session," ask them to draw a simple drawing -- from childhood, perhaps. Proceed with your planned set. Get back to the imp later, and you're ready to do a dupe on a larger scale with drawing pads or magic marker eraser boards. If the impression fails, your out is ----- ------ and even ----- ------.
