Magician to try Times Square escape By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
Tue May 22, 8:03 PM ET

NEW YORK - Magician Criss Angel plans to hang in a cube encased in concrete and suspended 40 feet above the ground near Times Square next month in a stunt that will test his Houdini-like ability to escape.

If he doesn't make it out within 24 hours, the cube will come crashing to the ground.

Angel's stunt, beginning June 4, is being done to promote the third season of his A&E Network television show, "Criss Angel Mindfreak," which debuts the next day. A&E is taking over a parking lot, where passers-by will be able to watch and hear him work.

The illusionist will be manacled and placed in a glass box four feet high, wide and deep. About three inches of cement will be caked around the cube before it is hoisted into the air.

If all goes well, Angel will use a rope to lower himself to the ground.

If not...

"If you're not scared of death, what is there to fear?" Angel told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

He has already survived hanging from a helicopter from fish hooks embedded in his skin and having a steamroller run over his body.

"I always try to do things that have never been done before," Angel said. "I was in the water for 24 hours in Times Square for `Good Morning America,' doing it in 2001. Later somebody else tried to mimic me."

It was an unsubtle reference to a competitor, illusionist David Blaine, who was featured in a prime-time special last year trying to set a record for holding his breath underwater. Blaine didn't succeed.

Angel doesn't spend any time looking over his shoulder. "I am, in my opinion, the best in the world today," he said.

The Times Square cement stunt (actually, at 46th Street at 8th Avenue), will be filmed by A&E for a future episode of "Criss Angel Mindfreak." A 24-hour live Webcast of the stunt will be available at the network's Web site.

Angel said the stunts are satisfying to him for what they mean for an audience.

"If you have that emotional connection, it is the truest form of magic; if you're giving people hope," he said.

It's one thing to be famous, however have you ever heard of perhaps being humble...

Why is this shocking? He is always claiming to be the first that, the best this.

It is all hype, can we hold that against him?

It is a fine art to hold your head high and hype your show but also come across humble and with some charm.

It always turns me off when someone says "I am the best" even if they just crossed the finish line first. let your actions speak for themselves if you ask me and leave the hype and promoting to those that you have hired to do that Smile

Let them say you are the best and you can in turn give some of the credit back to the team that is making you who you are. but that's just me.

Muhammad Ali didn't do too badly saying "I'm the greatest" -- it's all sell and hype folks... who's got the contract with A&E and the Luxor and drives a Lamborghini?

Uuuhhhh...Criss Angel? It's called marketing and both CA and A&E are doing it very well for Mindfreak. Nuff said.

Well Ali didn't do too well till his retirement with the fans if you remember right.

People didn't like the "I am the greatest" thing too much.

That being said, you sell the sizzle not the steak. Oh and Ali WAS the greatest, so it didn't seem so stupid.

How much air is there supposed to be in a 4x4x4 cube?

Seems like a mud covered dig at Blaine but again I got tired of caring.

I hope CA's show is entertaining.

I like Criss and what he has done for magic. Only in today's magic world are we supposed to be humble and polite. Didn't any of you see The Prestige? That was a fairly accurate dipiction of competitive magic during that era. And I have no problem with Criss stating that he is the best there is at what he does. Ali said it. Bret Hart said it. Even Wolverine makes that claim! And fact is, right now, Criss IS the king of the mountain!

I just read his "I am the greatest" quote to my wife to which she responded..."yeah, the greatest at camera tricks and set-ups." And she doesn't know anything about magic. She's the greatest.

As for him being the greatest, give me a Lance Burton or Mac King over Angel any day. But I do give Angel credit for the marketing success he has generated...In that sense, and only that sense should he ever compare himself to Houdini.

I didn't particularly care for his bash at Blaine. Blaine was doing stunts before Angel came into the spotlight. Not that it really matters.

I know very little about escapology, but I would like to see Angel perform any legitimate stunt. It appears that Angel uses the "stunt" presentation just to hype up the illusion finale. Blaine on the other hand, performs the stunt for what it is, and in many ways, comes across far more endearing in his own weird way.

I don't care who you are or what you are doing . . . saying, "In my opinion, I'm the best in the world today" makes him look like a tool and a d-bag.

True, Criss has made it, seemingly breaking through with so-so magic and a great team of consultants. However, I'm sure few magicians would agree with his own opinion of himself. Criss is a legend in his own mind.

Just my op.

Sadly, Criss hasn't really made it. He's not a household name or a personality (partly because he has no personality) even though he prostitudes himself to be in the public eye. Well, at least the NBA commercials are cool.... Wait... o yeah that was Blaine.
Poor Criss I can't help but to feel bad for him.

He supposes he's the best in the world right now because he's the only one with a weekly show that gets high ratings. Before Mindfreak he was the regular road performer but got a break with a Fox special and then began building himself from there. He has definitely worked hard to be where he is. However, I too don't think he's the "best in the world today".....or maybe he was that day and then a household name like DC did a liive theater show the next evening and Criss found himself in 2nd place again.

Showbusiness is creating and image and an audience. Ballyhoo has been a part of it from the beginning. How much you want to bet that Chris will be no where near that block when it comes crahsing down.

Ali was a boxer, and a sportsman. He was in competition with others. Art is not meant to be a competition, so theoretically sepaking there should be no best or worse. It should all be subjective, and be ablle to appreciate what others do, not be in competiton with them

"It ain't boasting if you can do it." -- J.H. "Dizzy" Dean

Ali proved it...but, has Criss?

Criss does say that it's only his opinion. However that does the bar pretty high for future audience expectations of him.

I wonder, if you already believe you're the best, is there any motivation to improve?

Proving he's the world's best has yet to be seen...and there's a long way to fall. (Metaphorically speaking, that is. I couldn't care less about his slow-motion, concrete strait jacket escape.)

I agree with the Dizzy Dean quote. It ain't boasting, but it certainly is being a jerk. Yeah he drive a Lamborghini as Pete points out. I've been in one, I don't know how his head fits in there.

Bill Malones advce from On the Loose 1 come to mind here, admittedly he hasn't had the success Criss has had, but I personally very much respect his opinion.

I believe he states teh worst thing that you can do as a performer is Get and ego, as when that happens you stop learning.

I don't think we need to discuss that piece of advice; rather, take it and think thoroughly on it.

Criss is quite a popular figure, but for the near future, will always be compared with DB. He needs to find a way to evade this inevitable comparison if he really wants to push forward.

To settle the question once and for all, I think they need a Celebrity Death Match.

Maybe they could both be buried in the same trunk, perhaps with some weapons, and whoever comes out alive would be declared "The Greatest". Or they could do Dueling Bullet Catches; each could choose the weapon to shoot at his opponent and load it, then they could shoot simultaneously.

Sure, they could both be killed, but that's a chance we'll just have to take.
