What´s up people, well, I'm not a bizarrist per se, but I like the concept and I like to freak my public out, so, this is the thing, had you ever seen Parasite or Creature by Arlene´s studios? well, I think they´re pretty well made stuff, but maybe too easy to figure out, at least the original creature pack, I haven´t seen Parasite to be honest, first of all, what do you think of this two gimmicks? and the other thing is, that I had been thinking... is cool that you can produce a little creature from your cupped hands but, it wouldn't be cooler if you could show the complete creature (bigger of course) moving and resting in your open palm? so, I had been working in a way to do this, I just wanna know if you had ever seen such a thing, and how was it? could you give me some information on this? just to make sure this method is original and if it could be worth developing.
Oh, by the way... By how was it I didn't mean to expose the method, just what do you think about it and if you think is a good effect and stuff, by some information I meant the name of the effect or the performer, you know, going with the Café rules. |

Less is more - a peek of the thing is much better so the spec's imaginationc an fill in the details... you let one of those things seen a bit too much and PROP PROP PROP FAKE FAKE FAKE pops up...
The best is the impromptu version seen on the video demo of clutching up a bunch of fallen leaves and showing the spirit within them.. then letting the leaves blow away... allows for ditching etc.

I think you´re maybe right on that, had you used the Creatures or Parasite gimmicks before? the commercial version is effective? and the idea of ditching it while the leaves blow away is good, I have seen creature performed, but not the video and ditching was one of the problems why I haven´t bought it, but I think I'm gonna, sure there would be a lot of posibilities in the presentation

I think their website had it - haven't been there for a while... and yep, I use Creature once in a while (combined with other "outdoorsy" effects like Rainmaker and the like)... ditching isn't a problem - its the same as the the classic item it is based on - its all about performance, misdirection and chutzpah

Baba,
You've learned an important lesson, magic is like real estate, Location,Location, Location. The only way I have found a creepier way of using a larger creature is during a seance, a demon scuttles across the room. It is more than scary, it is downright terrifying. I had an incident where a woman hyperventilated and had a panic attack, and I had to call an ambulance. That's a reaction I don't want a repeat of, but it certainly did not hurt my bookings at all. I do still use it, but with much more discretion.
My mom says I'm reprehensible, I think I'm perfectly hensible.

I love the idea behind the creature but I didn't find it 'REAL' enough so I made my own. I wanted mine to look more like something 'Jim Henson' would make, I wanted it to have more charecter, a little personality. After afew tests I found that the best approach was a fimo type air hardening putty. I played obout with the features untill I had a face that looked like an elf. I then inserted a d-lite style set-up so I could give this mischievious little imp glowing eyes on command, wacked on a bit of my own hair, painted it, ET VOILA !!!
you can go online and find advice on how to make realistic fimo models. There are also numerous books on making fantasy figures. I too have thought about this concept. Now the only way I can see this working if you don't have access to a hi-tech animatronics studio is this; A while back I saw a post on how to make a sleeping fairy. Now this thing looked unbelievably realistic. Sleeping,i believe this may be the key. Maybe do a d-lite fairy routine and have the fairy peek out because she's shy, eye's glowing red. Then have the fairy fall asleep on your hand. ZZZZZzzzzzzz... This I believe would require good acting, tape recorded noises that go with the acting of you and the fairy. Anything alive makes a noise. I have done this routine without the sleeping fairy and inplace a lite flite and some fairy glitter and a small silver fairy and it works... for little girls. If you want something more satanic looking research a few horror movies and play away... how about making one that hands a ring back to the spectator...

I have been doing creature ever since they came out, I customized mine to look like me. Sometimes when people ask how I do what I do, I tell them that it is because of my little helper(no sick jokes please). I capture him and show him around, then I go to put him in his little velvet bag and he vanishes. Simple, but very effective!

LOL !!! Come from behind that veil brother egregor. I see you staring. Oh my what is that CREATURE in your palm and why are you stroking him so???
Also if you think of an idea why the creature comes out of a box. e.g. Tooth fairy or some sort of demon in a cursed box you will be able to animate it on a completly different level. Pm me for ideas. Some years back at the magic castle swap meet I purchased a magical lamp. This effect is the one where on your command a torrent of smoke issues forth from the lamp. I found an antique one at the bay of E and made my own. I have experimented with blue smoke bombs and a zombie style d-lite rig with large red bulbs as eyes with a papier mache nose attached. Everything is painted the color of the smoke which is a thick royal blue color. This effect looks very real try it. And my gizmo is invisible in all that smoke. I haven't done anything with it yet but what I'm saying is think outside the palms when pondering how you can manifest a creature and make him come to life...

I like ichazods idea too ( a mini me that's too cool ). How about getting him out of a satanic, soul snatching change bag and in the bag you have a few of those gizmo's they use in the rattlesnake eggs joke. Show bag empty. Summon DEMON, release the gizmo's and the once empty bag comes to life. Reach into the bag. Strugle... the rest is presentation. Maybe think along the lines of this presumed animation approach.

IF I were to do creature in a totally serious, bizarre setting (and not like any of the ways I've typed up before), I would probably make it look "woodsy". I really like the idea of scooping up leaves, as though you've caught a gnome or wood nymph or something.
Scooping up a spirit out of thin air pushes disbelief a little too hard for my liking. I think creature, as it is, is just fimo clay and one of these molds:

There is some kind of a monster mold as well as a Tiki Mold put out by the same company. Michael's [Craft Store] carries them right next to all of the "Sculpy" type clay.

Mystician, I think you´re right, it would be better to scoop the creature from somewhere else than thin air, if you are already doing something that unbelivable, is better to make it kinda more logicall, not giving weapons for the public to suspect...even more LOL, great ideas in this forum

Isn't this an exclusive marketed effect where the original creator might deserve some attention rather than just discussing knock offs? Just curious...as this is usually the way of doing things on the Café. Or did the creator release it as a craft project?

In this case, no. The original effect goes back pretty far, and can even be found more recently in MAGIC FOR DUMMIES, which pre-dates Keith's work by several years.
However, I would not advocate knocking off Keith's sculpts and they are very nice. Chris |

We use a variety of worms and roaches as food for our lizards. When we go hiking fo rthe day and take the boys with us, we use either film canisters or old pill bottles with holes drilled in them to keep their live treats with us.
If you want a real living thing that can be examined, or even given to the specatator as a souvenir, this might work for you. They can be introudced into your hand via a normal TT, the kind used for goldfish, or you can sl**** load the container if your costume permits that type of application and produce real live bugs. You can purchase meal worms, wax worms and superworms at most Petsmart stores and use those and they don't require any kind of care or maintence to live for several weeks at a time. I have also experimented with small frogs (I've got 3 of them) about the size of a quarter. They go well with the old coin drawer either by changing a small green silk to simply as a quick production. Of course this would require yo be willing to keep and care for frogs.
