Chups are available on order...only not advertised currently. Remember this if I ever made it I still do. (Only better ) Just shipped one yesterday matter of fact.)
As to this thread...I'm having a hard time taking these little silly Finger Puppets seriously as a BIZARRIST element (considering we have gone over again and again what a Bizarrist is)...or the Rubber Barbed Wire...maybe for a kids show...

Lol... Unfortunatly we have to deal with what the propmakers send us, and this post was I believe about making the creature appear in your palm, animate. Obviously Antonio hadn't purchased this effect to see that it isn't possible , but the premise behind his idea is. Jim Hensons studio and many others have been doing this stuff for years, the technology and ideas are being passed on.
Have not magicians been conjuring spirits for centurys and through their acting make it seem like a real apparition... If BIZARRE magic is anything other than just an opinion or good scripting and acting then I have missed a thread somewhere... lol, the earth was flat if I remember some years back, that was the opinion of the educated anyway... Can some get away with this? most definatly, others definatly not... that's the fun thing about creating... its experimental with no boundaries... As to this thread I got an email off antonio saying thanks, this post had given him some ideas, no harm done... I do like your idea about the finger puppet. Show changebag empty, summon demon, turn changebag out and manipulate your little being with hidden hand...

If you believe they will believe. Hypnotists understand this concept, it is the whole basis of what they do. Mix this concept with imagination add a splash of magic and you then have a basis from whence to create wonder...

Declanring: Ideas and questions are one thing...opinions and advise derived from real experience are another thing...cliche ridden lectures are just tedious and make you seem no more than a poser/wannabee or knowitall.
"...it is good your thinking about your performance, and as some advice I would turn your mind to the bizarre forum...so as a way to stop this infernal curse which I myself once had show them some magic that scares the crud out of them so they don't want to see magic anymore...advice for this can be found in the bizarre forum..." So that's what Bizarre Magic is about? You have a few good ideas but the ridiculous posturing is becoming a topic of PMs. Yes, we saw your MySpace page. You have been advised by more than a few Professionals and those with a lot of milage under their belt (who are respected) on other threads (those threads removed because of your indiscriminate posts) and you were banned for whatever reason in the past. If it is so important to impress people rather than just participate then the past will be repeated. For me...try not to lecture if an opinion is ventured. Your counter opinion is just as valid as a comment but certainly not on the level of Advice...that requires credentials other than just reading in book stores. You won't find another post on the Café where I called someone to task and I've been on it for years, so obviously this is not a habit with me or one I enjoy...read and critique your own stuff before you hit the button. Thoughtful posting will give you the rep you desire.

Whilst not strictly the same effect, I'm currently trying to find a way of doing Cameron's "Manakin Macarbre" (sic) - currently bouncing ideas around with Simon at Magicurios (scolman here at the Café). His Faberge cabinet could be used to make the swtich, but does anyone have a good suggestion for the doll?
To update the effect (IMHO) I think the doll has 1) walk/teeter, and 2) be pulled apart at the end, exactly as Cameron described. Ideas/help/abuse/etc all welcomed! Steve

Ah.. the minigolem! Good luck fellow doc! My trouble was finding the inner "magical animations" bit for the clay beasty to be a bit noisy - but eventually used some padding etc... search ebay for old (well what Cameron used) - as for clay - I used play do.... as for the switch... I actually used the Dirty Work Station of all things... it was a close up bit and used a moment of misdirection by getting somone to get the scroll with the mystic words to say..
As for the little critter in the palm - again - to me - this is much less is so much more - and I have had success with the leaves scoop... and eventually made my own "face" for the beasty as I wanted it to look more Evil Elfin... with the advents of Higley's...maybe an Alien Eye might be better... hmmm... ok...to Doug with PMs once I work that little idea out... ooo ya!

LOL... you saw my myspace, how funny. I understand what I did to offend ya'll and I apolygise.
It seems that everything I write is disected and for some reason turned against me. I have been performing and studying bizarre magic for years and have come up with a few ideas myself. Am I not allowed to discuss them? or is it the style in which I discuss them? you tell me? I have no problems with any of you... how could i? I don't know you. I will continue to discuss my idea's, don't worry I brought a jacket and maybe if you have questions for me or you want to know about me p.m. me or visit my myspace. That way we can keep the topics on topic... let me know though I'm not trying to offend... it may just be the trickster in me...

Little beings being manipulated by hidden hands, I just can't relate.
Finger puppets if you must...ta da! But the early spiritualists I believe got more kicks out of using toe puppets from under the table. |

Ideas are always welcome...as is a bit of humility. Every bodies stuff is disected.
The difference in the Café is that you are talking to a huge variety of people and ages and experience levels. When you give advise to seasoned pros they like to see some seasoning and credentials...but at the level of just an idea being put forth it is far more acceptable to that group. Of course there are the newbies stopping by and don't know the real working info from the chatter. You can talk to both and be better for it if you leave the advise to the Bill Palmers and those who have been around the block. Turned against you? By who? There are consquenses for what we say and opinions formed. This is not new to you but what could be new is just taking a breath before hitting the button...do a lot of asking and encouragement. You have some good ideas. That could be your hook. But ideas are better offererd than imposed or bottomlined unless you have the backup. You think this has not been a challange since day one of this forum? They come and go...some get it some don't. Personally I learned who are and who are not my peers. Those who are above, (many) earned that position, those who are even, get the ribs and those who I don't know from bean dip get disected till I know if what they are saying has validity or some agenda. Kind of simple. For me this forum is my social life as well as a place of business. My only 'advise' is to post for the widest possible group...after 47 years in this magic game there is so much I don't know and the best thing I can do is admit it every day. There are one or two things I wrote the book on (literally) so I'll stake a position on those but everything else I am filled with wonder at what many have accomplished who post here. Lets just say, Humble doesn't Suck.

Thanks for that Dr Spektor.
On a recent fact-finding mission at Toys R Us (i.e. taking the kids out on a wet holiday weekend) it seems modern technology has killed off the items you describe, and I suspect you're right - E Bay or toy collectors may hold the key. Covering it clay worried me, due to the weight, but it sounds as if you (like Cameron) got a workable version. How did it play? Or better still, do you have any photos or video? Cheers! Steve

It went over well - only did it once... although a few things almost went really wrong ... but I think some people heard the slight sounds (I of course must of heard it magnified a 1000x) I am going to be doing some searching for some more quiet inner works...the play dough is nice and light... In think Tony Eye also has a bunch of golem experience. I don't have any picks from the last time I performed it but I do plan to peform it again soon - I have a conference in Prague in the near future and I plan to do a golem tribute there (how can I not??)... I'll see if I can vid film it... I will try to dig up the old version... I also stripped off as much as I could of the "shell" of the workings before adding the play dough! As you mentioned- light is good - and making the bottom parts heavier the the top parts help it from tipping.
Hmm... sorry if we have gone of the thread topic! I think I started a golem thread on this forum a few years ago - (hence why I actually have tried this after getting somea advice!).. we can try to unearth it (ouch!)

My personal opinion on using the Creature is that I reserve it for a very quick, brief moment for OP kids (other people's kids). I may have done a few traditional magic tricks, at the parent's request, and lastly, before I leave, I tell them I will show them how I do the tricks. Then I reach into their hair and show them, albiet briefly, my little helper. Then perhaps one more time, very quickly. Then he is gone, and it leaves them with their mouths open, wanting to see more.
I wouldn't do it for adults, as I just think it's too obvious, but for a little unusual element, every now and then for kids (who I usually don't perform for anyway), it works. Scott

I was working on an idea for the Creature that would work around Halloween:
My plan was to find an old lantern (the more peculiar looking the better) and explain to my guests that it is a special lamp used to catch goblins. Goblins are clever, nasty little beings who's single purpose is to cause fright in any living thing that comes near them. However, it is a little known fact that they become intranced by the flicker of candlelight. If one were brave enough, On a dark night they could catch a fixated goblin with thier bare hands. Of course you see the potential involved in a goblin hunt. As you walk through the park or woods, have them hold the lantern for you while you look. Tell them that goblins are masters of mimicking the sounds of other animals like owls, wolves and even human voices. Play off of any unusual noises. Eventually, you stop and pause. You tell them, "Be still and very quiet... Hold the lamp out a little further..." Then you sneek around behind the "goblin" that is sitting in the leaves just ahead. Slowly you reach down and pick up a handfull of leaves. The flickering light should play well across everthing in your hands. It also explains the motionless gaze of the captivated goblin. As soon as they see it, they will flip out and the crafty goblin will escape your hands. |
